To me that door and sidelights look too ornate, too heavy and not appropriate for your home. JMO.

Hi there! Your nice country house needs something unusual for the front door, and the door you want to buy is not "unique". Now your entry doesn't look welcoming it is dark. You can improve curb appeal with a bright color to paint your door. If you want to change your front door, give attention to the beautiful colors and wood grain. It may be a door with sidelights or double door.

I'll give preference to this door:

Agree with Patricia. Definitely stay away from the oval Victorian windows in the front door!

^this was going to be my suggestion, but I like what Patricia Colwell posted better for your home.

Should it be oak or painted and if painted, what color would you suggest? Thank you.

    Any design in sidelights?

I would rather go with an oak door. Design with sidelights (probably too modern for your exterior)

Your choice. I love a dramatic black front door, but a wood colonial style door would be elegant. If you go for a bright color, it will be a bit more informal IMO. What feeling do you prefer?

Namfan. Any chance you might paint siding? The yellow/green doesn’t do this house justice. Darker blue would be so much prettier with lovely white trim and your white windows.

The house color is actually a khaki color... lighting wasn’t good for picture. Thank you all... I appreciate all of your ideas. Probably going with oak, just have to decide on length and black caming design in sidelights. Any ideas?

nanfan, I have a suggestion but am having a problem posting the photo. Will keep trying. I like the idea of a door with glass that compliments your windows.

Here it is. My brother's house is a colonial, and I like their door choice with the windows.

I like your original door ..and I like that it's " ornate " it enhances the house . Looks great ! Have fun with your house ,!

Besides it goes perfectly well with your house , the black shutters .... Etc .

I think your current door looks nice, why do you want to change it? As far as paint or stain I would check to see how much direct sun exposure your door gets and if it gets wet when it rains. If the sun hits directly on it for part of the day, I would go with a good exterior paint. The sun really messes up the stain/varnish finish on a door and you will have to re-do it every other year or so.

If I go with a painted door, what color would go well with the siding and shutter colors.

Paint same color as shutters. Glossy black

I'd go with a wood-stained door. IMO, it adds more interest than having your door the same color as your shutters.

If you leave the storm door on, the wood door won't even show. If you paint the door, I would paint all the trim around the door including the frame of the storm door, glossly black. It would make more of a "statement" against the white pillars, and roof of porch. A couple black pots with flowers on the porch would bring more interest as well. Something like this.

Flo Mangan is right if you have a storm door you defeat the purpose of a beautiful door. You'll need a full length glass door in order to see it. I wouldn't use any ovals or arches in the door since they aren't true to the period of your home. A beautiful stained door would look lovely but it wouldn't have to be wood, there are a lot of metal doors that can be stained to look like the real thing.

There won’t be a storm ( forever view) door. Originally, we chose a wood door... solid two- panel with decorative full sidelights. I didn’t think that any of the wood colors looked right with black shutters. That’s why I thought to switch back to painted. Here’s a picture of wood style door I had originally chosen. Any suggestions???

Also, the inside trim and interior doors are white... thought that painted door could be a color on the outside and white on the inside. Thought the wood color inside wouldn’t look right inside with all of my white trim.

Pick a flattering colour for the house, THEN consider what to do with the door.
You could choose a fiberglass wood look door. Have it stained on the exterior and painted on the interior.

The least expensive idea is to paint the door. I’d suggest a brighter color (either the deep red or rusty orange family to compliment the khaki siding).

If you are considering a new color for the entire house and shutters, then you can repaint again or go for a new door at that time. Try paint first. The style of your door is good for your house.

Thank you redryder... I agree with you... unfortunately, the color representation of the house color on this photo is inaccurate... it’s actually a very nice shade of Khaki... just had it painted, new roof, lights.... just need a door to complete and a little landscaping. Thank you!

Its a great house. I love a bright door, but I would choose glossy back for your home.
Would you consider a nice wreath or other decoration for you door?
Ok, so I’ve decided on a black door with Satan nickel hardware. Suggestions please on style of door.... solid paneled door with decoration sidelights... etc.
And, should the sidelights be painted white and the door black or should the entire door and sidelights be black?
Any comments??? Regarding the black door and satin nickel?

These two pics show a black door with white trim. IMO the top one looks better than the bottom and I think the black trimmed doors and sidelights that Patricia shows at the top of the thread show the best. It is just personal opinion.
