Newbe Crocus Planting Questions

last modified: 8 years ago

Need some advice on the hows and whys of planting crocus bulbs. In in zone 8a in northeast Ga.

Until now all I've ever planted were a few daffodils. Seeing the photos this year made me decide that I also wanted to add a few hundred of these so where and when do I start?

Some will be planted around some trees inside of a row of liriope. I keep the area mulched with double ground hardwood to about 2 or 3 inches deep. When planting how deep under the mulch would you put them? I see it's advised to plant them 4" deep so would that be 4" plus the mulch or 2" in dirt and 2" in mulch? Also how many per sguare foot? Most things I see say 9, is that enough or too much?

Others will be planted in the open around the mail box (also mulched around) and some just in the yard.

Any and all advice is appreciated along with your do's and do-not's.
