For me, they seem slow every year just because I get impatient. Other than that they seem to be right on course for our area. Last year none of my apples bloomed until the 28th of May, this year it looks to be a week or so earlier.

Fully leafed out in peace river? Wow we are far behind here. I have watched the Manitoba maples in my yard barely move the last five days and it’s been over 22 for three of them. My crabapple is in freeze frame and it was 27 and 24 this weekend. I am lost. I have seen the pink in the flower buds for three days and they haven’t got any bigger....

Long days + river valley temperature maxima (up to 5c higher than the surrounding area) results in extremely rapid spring growth. There's a very short seasonal transition period here.

Ours are just starting to fill out in the past week or so. Pretty sure here it's due to lack of moisture. We just got a whole whack (technical term for about 50 mm) of rain, so that will kick start everything now. Hopefully!

Yes things have really started to pop the last day or so for us. I agree that the leaves coming out always seems slow to me. We got 3/4 inch of rain of Thurs, so that should help.

I'm not too upset to have things go slowly this spring, the last 2 nights for us have been only plus 3! Supposed to warm again this week though and hopefully we won't get a late frost.

Lucky you! we are so dry and the forest fire risk is alarming. I am praying for rain, but I did water most of my trees just incase.

I feel for you ubro..we are still bone dry but the 3/4 inch definitely helped. We were so dry last year too. We farm, so I'm sure hoping for more rain (but not too much!) this year. There is a lot of native prairie in our area that is at high risk for fire...sigh.

Some of my trees are very slow in leading out as well. I think it's due to winter damage. The comice pear I had for 4 years is really struggling, the few small leaf were curled and blackened in the center line. Cut a stem and I can see the canbium layer is light brown. The greencage plum planted last year probably won't make it at all. Several young saskatoon went through first winter no problem, but seems dead now. 2 sweet cherry combination trees planted last year, one is doing well, another one still not leafing out. Not sure it will survive. 3 arctic beauty kiwi, one has leaf out, other 2 buds don't seems swell at all. 3 grape vines. One leaf out, another 2 seem as the kiwi, looks dormant.

At least the Bosc and Bartlett pears are doing very good.

Keep my finger crossed for the ones struggling.

It’s certainly been a hard two years for the plants. I lost my sugar maple and a peony (of all things) over the winter, but all of my exotics survived, although I’m not sure how much longer that’s going to continue if we don’t get any moisture. There’s been no rain at all since the last of the snow melted a month ago.

Bosc and Bartlett pears are hardier than I thought.....

They are zone 4 or 5. The bartelett is espalier against the west side of stucco house wall. The Bosc is planted in the complete open front yard. I do winter wrap the trunks of all my tender fruit trees. Don't know why but Bartlett has no flowers this year. 2 out of my 3 apple trees have no flowers as well. They leaf out normal, looks healthy, but somehow they decided to take a year off duty.

Could have easily been the extreme cold in the beginning of April that killed the flower buds. My crimson sunset maple flowered three springs ago and had skipped the last two in which I can only bet is because of how cold the temps have been in April. It’s normal for fruit trees especially to have less hardy flower buds than leaf. Apricot trees always have this problem on the prairies.

Both comice pear and green gage plum now have new shoots staring at the lower trunk (above grafting union). So all branches are dead.

Too bad. My honeycrisp is leafing out super unevenly and slowly. Most of the buds are green all the way up to the top but it seems like some of them just dont want to come. That super cold early April day may be responsible for this.....although I have seen this happen to hardy trees as well like ash and oak so only time will tell. I scratched branches all the way up and they are all still green as well. Its like a shell shock thing.. I expect it to still pull through.

It’s not normal... we had a record breaking cold April day and I feel like that’s responsible.

Yes I can attest to slow growth. I noticed the first buds on both grape varieties start to swell. This is the latest they have ever been. I was worried I would have winterkill. I probably have some but won't know more until later. All the trees are slow. Only my wild canwood plums came out early. Tough plants.

My grapes are super slow too (Valiant). I was afraid they had died but nope, buds are swelling. Just slow. I'm hoping it's the same with my Boyne raspberries, this is the first year I've had them where they don't seem to be doing anything yet!
