Might also have been root pruned by a helpful vole. I suggest leaving it in place until it's completely leafed out, then evaluate it again.

It will be interesting to see how it develops. My Wheee! is spreading a bit this year like that. I don’t think this is a hosta that stays in a neat round mound.
