Countertop Edges

Which countertop edges did you use for your kitchen countertops, kitchen island, bathroom countertops?

I’m looking at Ogee for everywhere, but am wondering what others did and where. Thanks!

We did ½" roundover. I felt a sharp-ish edge would be an invitation to chipping.

We did pencil in a black & white retro style bathroom, in honed black absolute granite for vanity top. Really depends on the style you're going for.

Pencil for kitchen. I inquired about ogee for a vanity and was told they hardly ever do them anymore. Look at the Dupont edge. It's less ornate than the ogee.

For kitchen I am going with pencil. I will have some detail in my cabinets and don't need my counters to add to that. The kitchen we just took out also had pencil and no issues with chipping anywhere.

3 bathrooms have ogee and 2 have pencil. Went with simpler look in the kids bathrooms. The bathroom vanities are simple shaker.

pencil (although was called eased) everywhere except half bullnose at kitchen sinks.

I have what my fabricator called eased edge on perimeters- fabricators seem to not agree with each other on some of the terms- I’d describe it as slightly softer edge than pencil shown in your picture. But I love my ogee on the island. Wanted to give it a more furniture look. My granite has lots of inclusions and the ogee shows more of them.

Regular ogee is no harder to clean than the eased. I’d agree what bossyvossy shows looks annoying to keep clean.

I have ogee, but also a vintage style. I heard here that it can chip easier, but I've had the counters 2 years without a chip. I have no problem keeping my edges clean. The cut out for the sink is not ogee. Pics in my "my pics" idea book.

We’re doing mitered edge for our quartz, is that the same as pencil?

What countertop are you considering? Some are more dramatic with Ogee Sorry, my picture didn’t upload before

We’re using White Princess quartzite for the kitchen perimeter. For the island, we’re using a gray quartzite (Blue Crystal).

We used ogee in the kitchen and the one bathroom vanity we have replaced. We have traditional, raised panel cabinets and the ogee goes well with them. If the cabinets were simpler, I would probably go with a pencil (eased) edge, or a slight round over. I dislike the bullnose, so personal preference would eliminate that for me. I have no issue keeping the ogee edge clean, but mine looks like the profile outline you posted, not like the one bossy posted.

I seriously wanted half bullnose, but they did full bullnose in the kitchen. Wasn't worth fighting over, as it was a done deed. Ended up being pencil/eased in the baths.

I've been fixing countertop edges for over a decade. If you don't want to see the likes of me, avoid the pencil edge and insist that the rounded top edge as pictured on the Waterfall/Triple Pencil be placed on the Ogee and the Double Ogee.

Don't even think of a pencil edge at a sink cutout, please.

Good point Joseph, my top edge of the ogee is a soft curve, not pencil-sharp. Anna, definitely ask to see a real life ogee as done by your fabricator. Wanting a well done ogee is not the time to go with the low bid.

I wouldn't use two different quartzite's in the same kitchen. Since both are patterned they will wind up competing with one another.

We used a crescent in our kitchen. I have a chippy stone, so I wanted something slightly rounded, but not too much. I love it. I did the same profile everywhere. To me the ogee is too formal or fancy for my taste. I like simple. I have pencil in my bathrooms.

I've had pencil on my Corian countertops for years, and the only "chip" I've ever had was when the soffit was being removed and the workman allowed a huge chunk of plaster to fall from the ceiling. Fabricator repaired it perfectly - can't tell where it was.

Excellent point Anglophilla. Solid surface is the general exception to the "no pencil edge" rule. But still not at sinks.

Agree with cpartist about using two quartzites. One has an overall tone of cool gray and the other reads warm gray. Not a good pairing.

I had a 1/4" bevel and I am super happy with that - even at sink.
