This is really strange! It looks as if the small leaves that usually cover the buds somehow turned into real leaves! I'm looking forward to seeing the flowers, Donna!

I think that's exactly what happened! But why one is variegated, I can't imagine. It won't be long now but I don't hold out too much hope for an interesting flower. ;-))

I've seen this happen before. The flower spathes developed into leaf like structures. Clivias do this also.

Donna, I see variegations from time to time in single leaves. Last year I had a thin yellow stripe on a leaf of a Mocca x self seedling. I was quite exited but the next leaf was just green.

So...... Now I have a second scape with the same spathe coverings developing into leaves!! Both scapes appear to have 3 flowers. I never expected a second scape, let alone the same aberration!! Hope the flowers aren't too ugly, they're taking forever!!

Given the parents, I don't think that the flowers will be ugly by any means.

One of my Rio Negro bulbs recently flowered similarly here.

It would be really neat if that turned out to be an inherent genetic trait in the seedling instead of a one-off malformation!

It definitely adds an interesting visual element. It remind me a bit of how the shape and form of the pineapple plant is repeated in the leaves at the top of the fruit. I'm curious as to whether the plant will keep the additional leaves alive after flowering or if the stalk will die down as they normally do.

Well, we shall soon see, my winged flowers are starting to enlarge on the first scape!! I was wrong, there are actually 4 flowers on the second smaller scape!

The fact that both scapes have these wings really surprises me!

I've named her Chiclet with a few letters of Chico in the name!!

I just removed the pollen and on two flowers I was successful ( I waited too long) but one I think I wasn't so I just selfed that one. I put Santos (I'm working on fumes now) on one and the other isn't ready yet so I've got a few days to think.

The second scape is slowly growing and the two wings are still perfectly symmetrical so I can't wait until this one with 4 flowers opens!!

So cute! Chico has such strong genes I don't see any features of seedpod parent at all. Love that Chiclet name. lol

Here's the latest update on "Chiclet" with "wings"!

Well, the second scape has opened but the "wings" aren't placed quite correctly to view the flowers symmetrically but it's still not too bad. I didn't cut these leaves off this scape. It will be interesting to see if this happens another year; assuming of course, that I can get it to ever bloom again!

On the first scape I accidentally selfed one flower, the second one was x Santos and the 3rd was x papilio and the only one that took was x papilio!! Go figure and it's a nice healthy pod too!!

I have to agree with everyone, she is beautiful. I didn't notice the color on the reverse of the flower before and now I like it even more :-)))))

Similar scape that turned into leaves. I remembered this thread when I took the photos, but just couldn't find this thread until now. Pic was from August 2018, late season bloom for Aphrodite.
