finally the right (west) boundary!..the neighbor put in ugly metal edging..I tried to disguise it with logs and Bressingham Blue hostas..this is on the right (west) side looking north to the street in front..the front is small and I can capture it in one pic..my front walkway..final shot..standing in the back on the left side (east) looking to the right side (west)..from some spots you can't even see the boundary..I'm patting myself on the back because I PLANTED the ornamental trees (except 1 the builder planted) all of the shrubs, perennials and 80% of the hostas..I'm surprised that I could afford it!!..I inherited big trees, weeds and a few hostas..when I move a gardener should move in..

mbug..you're right..we bought the "house" (not a bad house I like it) because of the setting..

ken..thanks..the massive logs (ash) came from 2 of my neighbors..they surround the compost bin..we pile debris on the right..as we chip it we "spray" it to the left..last fall I started planting shrubs to hide it..and I planted climbing hydrangeas close to it to climb up the logs..there's a cedar "box" (open on both ends) that I covered a macrophylla hydrangea with once standing in the bin..not going to keep it so we'll take it apart and make something else with it..the projects never end..

It's so "woodsy". I feel like I'm going off to summer camp. I really love that arbor.

popmama..how's this for "meant to be?"..I have a Honda CRV..husband has an F150 with a long bed..forget why but he had the Honda and I had the truck..late fall at Lowes the arbor unassembled, still in the pkg marked down to $40..orig $249..I brought it home in our truck..it was perfect timing..was one of those once in a lifetime deals..it adds more to the yard than I ever imagined..you're right our yard feels as if you're camping..

Karin..I love that compost bin!..you can walk thru it but it has a sense of enclosure..and there's a place to pile debris!..we moved a big log to the right of the bin..we're going to level it and use it as an instant retaining wall..the stones in front of it were never set just laid in place so they will get a new home..I thought of you when we moved that log!..it has "character"..we used a handtruck..it fell in my yard from a neighbor's tree..when it fell I asked "do you want this limb?" and he said "keep it if you want"..apparently I take unwanted logs from the neighbors lol..

:-) as if you had not enough logs in your garden...I like the idea of using them as borders or in your case as retaining wall (has to be a really big log then)...with such a big garden the tools also have to be big!

Trees produce a lot of debris and with trees come birds and other animals...I only have a few pots under the plum tree and they always get dirty...Ma Nature adding to the look of the garden I assume :-)

Your front garden looks wonderful with the trees there is such a special light that adds to everything else. Congrats on that 'Schnäppchen' you made with the arbor, that's been a very low price...

in some neighborhoods logs wouldn't look right..but here they blend in..it's a rustic natural place..I've posted lots of pics but today I was trying to show a full pic of the backyard..and still it's not all of it!..my hedge hides the path across the back..as I finish edgings and stonework maybe I can take some close ups of my hosta beds..that arbor was definitely a 'Schnappchen' :-)

Thanks Kathy!..of everyone you know what it's like to tame a wilderness..I hope the hardest part is over..we've cleared and cleaned up out of control areas and planted the shrubs and trees..now a few years of finishing touches..

A wonderful combination of FF and BA! I really like the use of logs for giving shape to the beds. Those leaves look like my Regal Splendor when I caught the cat chewing on it :-)

the logs create paths AND keep people (including my husband and myself) from walking on the plants..would be impossible to know where everything is in the winter..we don't have any cats around but I guess it's possible..never would have thought of a cat!..starting to love FF as much as June..

Max (the stray cat) is gnawing at everything at the moment, it's like he found his love for vegetables :-) My ornamental grasses have suffered a lot, but this does not matter, I'm going to take them out of the beds anyway...

I also like First Frost, it lights up the bed with the blue ones :-) And my Blue Angel is exploding this year. I took away that small tree but that has not been enough, she seems to devour everything around her :-) Have to think about removing a few more branches of that other sugar cone... Your bed will look fantastic in a few years, a sea of FF leading to BA :-)

even though they're new and not that big the FFs bring some life to that spot in my woods..will be great when they're bigger :-)
