Hi, i definitely think you should put valances instead of curtains because curtains will probably stop natural light from coming in :)

@sunbev, I like shades, but I'm such a rookie. what colors should I go with, the kitchen is basically white with the black granite and some green accents here and there. I have to be careful to choose a color that will also look good on the window in the family room, since the rooms are an open concept, I want to make sure they all flow. Thanks.

I would not put a shade over a blind. I would add stationary curtain panels, installed at the ceiling--this will add height, and have some type of valance over the sink--or leave as is. What color green? Here are a couple fresh new fabric samples for inspiration. You definitely look like you could use some color. Good luck!

Oh, sorry Maria--those are just fabrics, not curtains. If you like one of them, I can look up the manufacturer and you could call your local window treatment professional for help fabricating.

Thanks JMittman, that would be great. I'd like to color coordinate all the window coverings/curtains, and I have a banquette there too with a green cushion so I'd like to color coordinate the throw pillows with the curtains/window coverings.

@Maria We agree that roman shades in a fun fabric will add a lot more brightness to the space. We love these below from Levolor and they come in lots of different fabrics.

Part of why your space is looking 'unfinished' might be because your blinds are mounted outside the window frame. After you paint the frames, if you choose wood blinds in a coordinating color and hang them as an inside mount, you'll have a lot more polished look.

I would recommend swapping your current blinds for some nice Hunter Douglas Faux Wood Blinds. If you go with a 2 1/2'' slat, you will allow more natural light through when they are open and have a better view out. Hunter Douglas Everwood Faux Wood Blinds come in 2'' or 2 1/2'' slats and various colors and stain looks. It would look nice to get a white color that matches your new trim color. It will really help the window pop. They also come standard with a nice decorative valance that covers the top head-rail.
