Lighting is really, really hard. A professional lighting plan makes a huge difference in even the best decorated house. You need to consider the kind of lighting you are using, the color light it emits, the position of the lighting in the room and the uses of the lighting. Any one room must have multiple light sources for various moods and tasks. I would look for a book to help me get a basic understanding of what is needed and then I would see about hiring a lighting professional to help put together a comprehensive plan. I'd say experiment with cove lighting more. People tend to shy away from them in homes thinking its too complicated. With professional help it really gives a home a unique lift. I'd also think more in terms of paint finishing which can help accentuate your lighting. Sometimes less is more...

Some trends that are seeming to stick around for a while are mid-century modernism (although your home type matters), under cabinet lighting/strip lighting, and smart lighting.

As for what to keep an eye out for, light bulb types! These will make or break your lighting plan. Look for 800 lumen (bright) LED bulbs with temperatures around 3000K (warm) - if you want to do it correctly, you'll apply different bulb types to different rooms e.g. bright cool light in the kitchen for tasks while having warm lighting in the bedroom. Can't go wrong with dimmable bulbs as well.
