It won't damage the pump, but it will put unnecessary back pressure on the filter. It will cut the turnover rate of the system which results in poor filtration and lack of chemical distribution.

There is some experimenting here with the restrictor placement and eyeball/opening sizes. A balance must be achieved to allow for proper flow through the system especially a pool heater.

Check your filter pressure prior to adding restrictors. 10lbs above that is not recommended.

I don't know your plumbing layout to give real suggestions.

Also, pointing the restrictors towards the opposite wall downward will still give you surface tension to allow skims to collect debris. Helps with chem and heat distribution also. Pointing toward the surface sometimes pushes debris into a corner.

So, I'm not quite sure what the conclusion is here. The pool was/is running with the restrictors, so ... don't mess with it?

It's ok to have them in place. If the flow is very strong, to the point where if you tried to thread them in while the pump is running, and you were unable to do so. I would remove them or at least one and compare the flow. Check the pressure gauge on your filter tank before and after and see if there is a change.
