Prunus serotina. The things on the leaves are galls or other aberrations resulting from infestation by something.

Prunus serotina/Black cherry is a large tree and will seed around a fair amount. The galls on the leaf aren’t unusual here in New England. If this isn’t a good spot for a large tree, I would get it removed sooner rather than later for ease of removal and cost reasons. As you noticed, it does grow quickly.

Unless the tree predates the fence a bird sitting on the fence is probably why the tree is right there.

in flower.. a huge tree can reek of the magnificent aroma of wet ugly dirty gym socks.. lol ...

btw.. a vast majority of galls are cosmetic in nature ... and in no way harm the tree long term .. i mean really .. their life span is limited to when the leaves fall off ..

the cherry themselves are maybe a quarter inch.. and are 95% pit ... and i am pretty sure the birds use them a laxative ... usually using gutters and fence.. etc.. as places to deposit prefertilized seed ...

Interesting about the scent, Ken. Our woodland edges have a lot of these, and I have never noticed an unpleasant scent (unlike callery pears which do reek.)

I know these are considered weed trees by many, but I find them beautiful - bark, blossom, and casually graceful form. If you need a medium size tree, you could do worse.

i have maybe a dozen P. s. ....huge trees on my 5 acres ... imo.. there is nothing wrong or bad about the individual trees ...

but the millions of seedling trees can be problematic ...
