I think the easiest way would be to air layer a few of the younger branches. That way you would have exact copy of mother tree but smaller plant you can control growth and shape in the future.

Also by air layering you will get a fully developed root ball on branch before its cut from tree ensuring better success rather than trying to root a cutting.

Last year I did rooted cuttings and air layers. The cuttings only 50% took and survived 1 up-pot. With the air layers 90% took, survived up-pot and 1 even put on fruit since my friend had inside for winter, it never went dormant.

hi sam, thanks for getting back. i tried to do some stem cutting several years ago and they didn't take. might have been me, didn't pay a lot of attention to what i was doing and my rooting medium might have been old? i'll try the air layering technique and see what happens. thanks again.

I think since that looks like a woody bark type tree, younger branches or new growth would be easiest to air layer. Anything from last year or this spring should have plenty of energy to form roots.

Collect a couple of water bottles, some peat, tape and foil. Those are all the supplies you need. Depending on type of bark it can take 6-10 weeks for roots to fill bottle before cutting plant away but it'll live since the roots are stronger.
