I put three 2l bottles in a three foot long window box. But I don't live in a hot climate and it is almost certain to rain a few times while we're away.

if possible.. take them down.. water the heck out of them.. and put them in full shade ...

another idea.. would be to use pot in pot ... so when vacation rolls around.. you can remove the inner pots and plants ...

Thank you Ken. None of the wall hanging planters are easily removed. I do use a kiddy pool for my other plants.

Ask a neighbor kid to help you. Pay 'em a couple bucks to do it. We usually need someone to watch our pets anyways, so we just ask them to water any important plants as well while we're gone.

Thank you, but no neighborhood kids. We don't live in a neighborhood. There are 4 of us on a private road. We wave to each other, but otherwise everybody minds their own business.

We don't go away in the summer for more than four days at a time - we also shut off the water and don't ask anyone to take care of our garden. I water the pots well and cover the soil surface with chopped leaves I've saved from Autumn. I'm sure other choices of mulch would work too. I also bunch the smaller pots together so they aren't as exposed.
