Early heat wave

Probably nothing to most of you in warmer climates but four weeks of between 26 and 30 degrees is much too early for May in Sweden. We had only three weeks of spring after a very long winter and then high summer hit us. No rain for more than a month. Roses do well in my heavy clay because the ground still holds moisture but everything else suffers, including me. Mosquitos swarm all day, not only at night, winter moth caterpillars are devouring the oaks.

That's warmer on average than it has been here lately. We haven't hit 30 yet.

Oh no. We are all having such strange weather these days, it seems. My family in the Midwestern US was complaining to me about the weather still being oddly cold and wintery only a few weeks ago, and this weekend they had temperatures in the 90s F (32 C).

Nik, I know because I talked to a friend in Maroussi today, probably the reason why I was inspired to write this post. He told me we had warmer weather than they had. Only gardeners complain in Sweden now, non-gardeners are overjoyed with this unseasonal weather.

We are having an extended spring with very variable weather lasting from February until now.. I have never seen so many blooms on my roses and so much powdery mildew either.. I have learned that almost no rose is immune to this affliction... Grapevine growers must be desperate and spraying like madmen..

Yes, the new normal seems to be expect anything anomalous at any time. We've had much cloudier weather than usual which I love since it allows me to be outside during the daytime. Unfortunately no rain to go along with it; we're having another drought year.

Same story here in the PNW, Mariannese. We hit 90 in May! At least it has cooled down again, however long that may last. Carol

Oh, wow. It looks like we have the same heat wave, just on the other side of the planet but I think the similar latitude. Cynthia, 102F is really way too HOT for zone 5! Some parts in the Northeast are also experiencing the warm weather (in Buffalo, of all places). Today was 30C (86F) here, the forecast for tomorrow is 90F (32C). Our winter was also long, spring almost nonexistent, it even snowed in mid-to late April. And now this...

It's the same here. Yesterday I was too hot in a t-shirt, and yet it's officially winter in a couple of days. Today it has turned chilly, and we are having rain and a thunderstorm. Usually our summers are wet, and our winters dry, but we had virtually no rain for the past 8 months.

Trish, it sounds as though you're experiencing the same drought we are. From everything I've read, global warming is advancing more quickly than was ever thought and it's very unsettling. You try to live and enjoy your daily life, but the specter of doom is always somewhere in the background. I truly believe that we humans have ruined this planet to the point of no return. All the realistic data seem to validate that. A few countries are trying to do something positive, but that leaves hundreds that aren't, or are not doing enough. That Chinese curse "May you live in interesting times" is hitting us with a huge wallop. I'm trying really hard to consciously enjoy each day and treasure it.

Sounds like everyone's having bizarre and largely unpleasant weather. Marianne, that is hard. Here it's been raining every day, tropical downpours that arrive in the late afternoon, and cloudy much of the rest of the time. This is so untypical of Italy this time of year! Disease is rife among the roses and it's sticky, but at least temperatures are bearable and we have plenty of water. It sounds like no one has had much of a spring.
