Home Camera and/or Security System?

last modified: 8 years ago

I am on information overload, as I've just spent the last hour reading reviews on home security systems. And the common threads I've seemed to find about the DIY companies is that their customer service is poor to non-existent so good luck resolving equipment problems - and that the professionally-installed systems push you hard to buy the most expensive thing ever.

My primary goal is to find something with wifi video streaming for my second home, so that I can check on it in real time when we're not there. Mostly I'd like to be able to pull up video/cameras and see that my front door is still intact and that the floor isn't flooded with water, etc..

Simpli-Safe seemed to be a front runner, until I looked at customer reviews. Apparently no one can get through to customer service when the equipment isn't working correctly, or you're getting error messages, etc..

I'd really appreciate it if you could share any pertinent experience, companies you've liked or not liked, etc..

Thank you!

I use Kuna, which came with a porch light that I bought, and it is has real time video streaming. It's very inexpensive, but it works well for me, and I especially like the porch light. I've only contacted customer service via email, but I got a fairly quick response. I asked them if I could record my own message for the doorbell, and they told me that I could not do that at this time, and so I only have about eight different sounds/messages for the doorbell. I used the barking dog sound for Halloween night. I think it is fairly easy to add additional camera/lights to the system, but we only need the one.

I have a Ring doorbell at home and an Amcrest ProHD at my second home. It sits inside an upstairs window and overlooks the driveway, front door and garage door. It's far more sophisticated than I need which increases complexity but their service is great. There are water sensors you can put on the floor but I've not felt a need for that as I'm not at risk of flooding and I turn the water off when I'm not there.

I posted earlier this month about Blink cameras. Available on Amazon.

    Blink Post

They have indoor/outdoor cameras, and "live" capabilities.

We've had them almost a month, and are quite pleased.

I have Ring doorbell and a couple of their cameras. The key is to have them wired in or you have to take them down every few weeks and charge them. Ring customer support was very good, BUT they have been bought out (by Amazon, I think) so I don't know how that has affected the company. The product itself works fine, any issues are usually the fault of the internet/wifi acting up.

I think Ring is now Blink.

    Amazon Cloud Cam. Easy. Peasy.

$99 each if you buy three.

ETA These water sensors are very inexpensive. If the alarm sounds, the camera will pick it up and will send you an alert.

I ended up using the Amazon Cloud Cam suggested above.

It works almost perfectly for my needs.

My only complaint is I have 1 camera which is occasionally very touchy about not being able to re-establish a wifi connection if the power gets interrupted. The other cameras never have any issues rejoining wifi, but 1 particular camera can only automatically rejoin as it is supposed to about 50% of the time.

Of course this started about 1 week after the warranty was up. Ha. Because isn't that the way life always works!

So I have that camera located in the least important location for now, and I'll probably replace it at some point. (Yes, I've rebooted it. It just seems to have connection gremlins that can't be resolved.)

Other than that, I've been very pleased.

There are about a million options out there, and what works well for one person may not meet your particular needs though, so you'll still have to do some researching.

People on my Nextdoor rave about Arlo Pro cameras. Seems like most of these come from Costco. We really only want cameras and not remote or app based door locks.

    Really dude?

"Blake" also seems to be a spammer, judging from previous posts.

....and we're back for a 3rd attempt at spamming us.

I don't know whether to feel proud or offended that it seems to be my old post that keeps getting spam-botted. LOL.

@patriceny, while we are here, are you still happy with the cloud cam?

I tried to purchase a few more but it seems Amazon bought Blink, Nest, and Ring. Trying to figure out if any of the new cameras integrate into the cloud cam app...

I am still really happy with it. The one camera with connection gremlins spontaneously resolved itself too. When does that ever happen?!

The cloud cam app works really well for me. I get alerts almost instantaneously when any of them pick up movement. The same cameras have been going strong for 3 years now with zero issues, other than the weird connection issues in that one camera I mentioned above.

Even though it's from a while back, the struggle with finding the right security system still resonates. Back then, we were in the same boat, drowning in reviews and recommendations.

We took a leap of faith with a company that seemed promising, and thankfully, they delivered. Their customer service was on point, which was a relief considering the horror stories we'd heard about other companies.

Funny thing is, I stumbled upon wyesecuritysolutions.co.uk during my research too. They had some solid insights that helped steer us in the right direction. Looking back, it's crazy how much technology has advanced since then, but good customer service never goes out of style.
