Purchase Freon?

I hope someone here can advise me. We have 3 Geothermal units in our home that are 24 years old. I had one of them serviced a couple of months ago. All it needed was a pound of freon. The repairman told me that the price of freon was going to rise in about a year and said that I should go on Ebay and buy some before the price rises even more. My husband said that if we bought a 20-30 lb. canister that there was a chance that when we used it then it could leak before it was all used.

If you were in our position what would you do? The 2 units run fine, we usually have one of them serviced a year.

    If a pound of refrigerant was needed, then I would think there is a leak. Did the tech locate and fix it? If not, then you are going to spend a lot of money on refrigerant whether you but it on Ebay or elsewhere.

    You also need to think about replacing your 24 year old equipment. It is at the point where repairing may not be practical.
