Tomato plants with yellowing leaves

We have two tomato plants that have yellowing leaves and a few brown spots. A few leaves have dropped, also.

They are both in 20 gallon containers. After we got this expensive local soil, we found out from a neighbor that it has little or no nutrients (they cook it too much). I think we added chicken manure in the beginning (not absolutely sure - memory lapse), and gave it a boost once with some tomato feed (Dr. Earth, I believe).

My husband checked the soil and said it's still a bit damp, but not too much.

He packed the soil into the pots very hard with his boot, and I'm not sure if that has made for less drainage.

I'm thinking either nutritional deficiency or too much/little water? Would love more experienced ideas on this. Thanks in advance!
