Clematis

oh, thank you! I'm so happy I didn't pull it out.

I also bet it’s a clematis. Don’t know what kind without a flower tho. The conifer is probably some cultivar of Hinoki, chamaecyparis obtusa.

There are flowers buds visible so you'll soon know what Clematis you have. The leaves point to one of the large flowered types.

I wouldn’t leave the clematis growing on the Chamaecyparis since it may shade out foliage. Give it a support of some kind and if needed to keep it there initially, tie it to the trellis. The Hinoki will thank you.

Possibly Etoile Violette.

The clematis turned out to be so gorgeous. Now, how do I know what type it is for pruning? It reached its peak around the 2nd week of July and has been finished with blooming for a week or two now.

Type 3 based on timing. Floral’s suggestion is reasonable. Hard prune some time between late fall after hard freeze and early spring when buds start swelling. Take down to 2-3 buds per stem since it flowers on new growth. That will give the most flowers and if done just before the snow flies you won’t have to look at dead vines all winter. It if it doesn’t get pruned for some reason, it won’t hurt the plant.

I appreciate that you update as your plants develop.
