No need to wait. Just put the annuals in around the daffodil foliage. Or are you intending to pull the bulbs out before planting annuals? If so it isn't necessary for daffodils. It can be for tulips depending on your climate and the type of tulip.

The old theory that you need to leave all bulb foliage in place in until it dries, turns brown and falls off on its own is generally the best practice to follow to ensure a good bloom period the following season. However, you can short cut the process to some degree. As long as the foliage after blooming remains in place for at least 6 weeks, you should be safe to cut it off and remove. The 6 weeks allows sufficient time for that foliage to accomplish its task of photosynthesis and recharge the bulbs with the nutrients necessary to produce next season's flowers.

Don't ask me to document this - I read it somewhere in the vast annals of horticultural literature I plow through continuously and now can't find the resource :-) But the science behind it made a certain amount of sense so I tried it. And it works!! But you DO need to leave the foliage in place for at least the 6 week period.

Note that this applies only to narcissus/daffodil foliage, which tends to be particularly long lasting, often remaining green (if floppy) for as much as 3-4 months. Other spring flowering bulbs seem to have a much shorter ripening period and the foliage does its work and dies back quickly.

Thx all. In all honesty, I'm just trying to be a good-giver per-se as the daffidols are coming out this fall and being donated to whomever. They're just not my thing, but I planted some just to see if it would grow on me - literally. I just want to adhere to best-practice when it comes to the bulb/food storage. Eh. I guess when I cut down the tulipia, then I'll do the same for the daffidols.

Then my suggestion would be to dig out all the bulbs, leaving the foliage intact, and heel them in somewhere out of the way to allow the foliage to ripen properly. Doesn't even need to be a proper planting. Just lay the bulbs and foliage on their side in sun and cover the bulbs and roots with soil.

This will give you a clear, clean bed to plant annuals while still allowing the spring bulbs to recharge and do their thing.
