adding to hunter's PLD drip hose

I have hunter PLD drip - the kind with the emitters built in. I'm wondering whether I can punch into the space in between the built in emitters to add other types of emitters. Will this impact drip down the line? I can't seem to find the answer to this basic question anywhere online. Thanks in advance.
