Sans outside in WI + “eve” at big box store

Hi everyone,

I have been sitting mostly on the sidelines since getting the sans bug last year. I have been thoroughly enjoying all of the discussions and knowledge of this group. Thank you!

1. I found this sans for $5 at HD today. Looks like “eve” to me. What do you think? Also the pot seemed to big And the soil a touch peaty so I sized down slightly to a clay pot and better medium. Image below.

2. My sans collection has been outside for a few weeks. I put them in the garage at night as temps still dip into the 50’s. Images and notes below.

In my experience, cutting the leaves of a Sans to encourage root development is not the way to encourage root development. There is a search function at the top of the Houzz forum and it will let you search in the Sansevieria category. Put in the terms "alfalfa," "Stush" "potassium" and you will bring up posts from Stush about using alfalfa and potassium in the water for Sans. I have used this method with my Sans -- probably about 25 in number -- and also with Gasterias and Haworthias, and it absolutely promotes for root growth and leaf growth. Good luck!

This Sans was given to me and basically had no roots left. Chopped up a leaf to start more and repotted the plant. Recently I added the baby sans and main plant to one pot. I like the look of full pots. The main plant is still wobbly. I have it supported but am contemplating cutting the leaves down to encourage root development. Thoughts?

Thank you Robin! I had read those posts but hadn’t thought of it for my case. It is good news to not need to cut the leaves. I will be getting those minerals soon!

Hope it works for you, Lauren. Based on Stush's advice, I got alfalfa in a local VitaminShoppe near me, and potassium at a health food store here. I think the proper blend is 3 alfalfa and 1 potassium. Also, Stush wrote recently that he has an updated procedure -- just stick alfalfa tablets directly into the soil! I haven't tried that. I still use the watering mix. I water with alfalfa/potassium for 2 or 3 rounds of watering. For my Sans that means about every 10 to 14 days. (Yeah, I keep 'em dry.) Then after 2 or 3 rounds, I got back to just water for anywhere from 3 to 6 months, depending on how how it is here in FL. I hope you get good results too -- it is wonderful to see Sansevieria healthy and growing!
