Paint help please!

My daughter wants to paint her E/NE facing room Sassy green by SW, and wants a blue for her bathroom right outside. What blue might go well? Bathroom has small S/SE facing transom window so is quite bright. The rest of the house is a unknown brand off-white that looks very close to Antique White by SW. Thank you!

These things can be tricky, but on my screen SW Smoky Blue reads as blue, not grey, and if the bathroom is sufficiently well lit it could be very elegant. And you add touches of the bedroom green to help tie them together.

Check out the colour itself before rejecting it on your daughter's behalf. I saw many different versions online. The one I posted seemed to be a fair representation judging on the majority I saw, and it's not baby diaper. And yes I think you should indulge her colour choice. It's her room. If you hate it, you can always ask her to keep the door closed.

Thanks guys. To her credit, it is much greener on the swatch than the online version, and is the exact green on her Pottery Barn floral duvet. The room does need painting - the paint the house came with isn't washable in the slightest and looks awful in her room right now, so "Most" paint colors would be an improvement.

post a pic of the room, showing the bathroom, and the duvet cover. it's too difficult to google these colors and come up w/something that may match.

agree about that sassy green looking like vomit. (how do they get sassy green out of that color? It looks like stalks of wheat left out to ferment)

this is lowes color w/that name

    How old is your daughter?

she's 11. I'll try to take some pictures today.

If the green is, as you say, brighter than it appears on some of the online pictures, it sounds to me to be perfectly suitable for an 11-year-old. The dark blue I posted, however, is probably far too sophisticated. Look for a lighter blue -- and yes, still add green towels, or accessories of some sort to the bathroom. Similarly, you can carry the blue into her bedroom. You should find it easy to source bedding with the right combination of colours, for instance. Or mix the colours with throw pillows on the bed.

I totally agree with Rina. An 11 year-old's bedroom should be fun and "sassy". Could you post a pic of her duvet? Taking colors from that, in my opinion, is an excellent way to handle a young girl's room and I truly applaud your willingness to let her take charge of her own environment. She will have so much pride in what she achieves and it's just paint. My parents had us painting closets as soon as we were old enough to hold a roller or a brush. As a teen I went through a couple of iterations and my parents supported all my weird ideas. Giving me my room to make my space allowed me to experiment and grow my decorating wings. It gave me a confidence that I would otherwise not have felt. I went through a red and black oriental period to a pink and green girly theme to a graphic phase of black and white and cut out words from newspapers to cover the doors on the built in cabinet my dad made for me. Give her that freedom and that space to bloom. Those years fly by fast. You can make it more sophisticated after she leaves the nest. Now is the time for her to shine!

Hey, now, Jennifer Hogan. I have black walls in my living room and I love them! Black walls can be fantastic. (BTW, I did not have black walls as a teenager. I just painted a chest of drawers black and red.)

And crotch-high skirts in public are not the same as green walls at home. We've already established the green she likes does not look like the picture you posted. I think you can trust mom to take it from there.

Jennifer made important points about samples in the room lighting. I wished I had gone a few shades lighter on my daughter's purple bathroom because I only tested it near the brightness of the window. My labor intensive fix was a cilor wash of pure white over the wisteria paint. Save yourself the extra work with more samples first.
Also consider just painting an accent wall the sassy green. Let the rest be the antique white in a scrubble finish and carry that through the bath too. Then play with the blue and green in accents like towels, window treatments and such.

I find the selection of a green wall color and selecting clothing from the Jr. Slut Dept. completely different. An 11 year old girl needs help building and maintaining their self esteem. This is a perfect opportunity to let her lead the decision making process and support her. You can select 6 different samples including the one she likes and a lighter shade and a darker shade and something a little brighter and something a little more subdued and something a little more blue and something a little more yellow. Paint large swatches with her and then look at them together and decide what works best with the duvet cover and her furniture and the light in the room. If you control the decision making process she learns that you don't trust her ability to make good decisions and she will doubt herself. Then when that day comes when her gut says "this doesn't feel right", she might second guess herself and get into the car with some guy or get pushed by her friends to smoke or drink instead of trusting her own ability to make a good decision.

DK, Rina posted a sample from Lowe's that was a better color. That's the one she's recommending. And using this as a teaching time but allowing her to spread her wings is not "kowtowing to fickle desires". Stuffing her in a box to satisfy a color-in-the-lines mentality is just stifling her creativity which is a crime in itself.

DKHass - do you understand that your eyes have 3 cones that create color - Red, Green and Blue. When both the Red and Green cones are highly activated by light waves you get yellow. When we desaturate yellow it tends to go orange or green because the spectrum for true yellow is quite narrow. This may technically be in the yellow spectrum, but because of they way our eyes work, it appears green, which is acquiesced by SW through their choice to name the color "Sassy Green". They didn't call it "Sassy Yellow".

DKHass, that's a nice looking guest room. It's entirely too sedate for a lively 11 year old. Let kids be kids for the very few years they are able to be that. For example:

You're correct, DK. Tastes do evolve but it takes time and experience. Am I a designer? What an interesting question. I presume that means you are and that anyone who isn't does not have a valuable opinion. I was a professional floral designer, taught classes in that, studied under one of the world's premier floral designers and, yes, I know a good bit about theory and design techniques. I also recognize constrained, non-inventive design when I see it and have made it my life's mission to keep children from having to experience that restrictive conformity when possible. Shell's mom is willing to let her explore and I applaud that. My comments have been to "have Shell's back" so to speak and let her know that what she's doing is a good thing. Her only question has been what shade of blue she should use. Your response is to tell her what an ugly shade of Yellow has been chosen even though she's indicated the actual color is not what is showing on the computer. In my experience, any color can be accentuated and manipulated to achieve an appropriate outcome, even colors that I personally would not use. To me, that is what a great designer does. A truly intelligent designer is able to work within the confines of the client's wishes -- not make the client feel like less of an individual because she does not conform to the designer's preferred palette.

Thank you, everyone. Definitely some things to consider. Here's her room. It's very small, but has great light. I had to stand in the closet to get as much of the room as I could. lol. These were taken about 6:15 pm, so the room is normally brighter. If we do the green, I'd probably get her some plain, neutral sheets so there aren't TOO many colors going on. Any other ideas are welcome as well.

And here is the fandeck on the bed along with her bathroom.

yes, it does seem to go well enough, even though that particular shade is minor player in the duvet. all four walls in that color,,,,wow,,I don't think it's going to look good. now, if you wanted to do an accent wall and the others white, that would work,,

doing one wall in a red, or even one of the lavenders, and bringing in some gold,,maybe spray the chair gold, the mirror gold,,a small gold shag rug,,,

just show her some other suggestions and see what she says. you don't have to change her mind, just show her what else is out there. maybe she's not aware that something will look better?

as for the bathroom, it looks just fine. if you must do blue, I'd do a pale green/blue. very pale. BM Pale Oak would work well in there,,,but it's not much different than what's currently on the walls.

Try several different greens. Looking at the bedding I would try the Sassy Green and I would go a little more green - maybe something like the green on the reverse side of the cover or one shade lighter. Samples only cost a couple of dollars.

Since your original question was about the bathroom, I would use this opportunity to teach her about skin tones and the colours that compliment hers. Then help her choose a colour that is going to reflect beautifully on her face so she has a prep space that doesn't make her look like she's in the last stages of consumption. Since the room doesn't adjoin the bedroom, it doesn't specifically need to coordinate.

'last stages of consumption'. that's a great line. yes, that color green w/one's reflection in the mirror is a horror. Of course, she's only 11, so I'm guessing she isn't concerned w/makeup. give it a few years.

Jennifer Hogan, the green you indicated is the one I zeroed in on in that swatch. (Rina, don't hate on my string of prepositions...*wink*) That soft green with the vibrant duvet would be a great backdrop. I agree with Rina that blues would not be overly happy with the duvet.

She doesn't have a headboard. So, give her bed a headboard with paint. You've decided the color matches her bedding. Should she want new bedding in a few years,or you don't want the trouble of painting an entire room, you could paint a headboard. If you decide to try this, you'll need quality painter's tape.

I painted this weekend, using Tansy green, which is less yellow than Sassy green. I still have some touchups to do, and need to buy a nice pot for the ficus. Any suggestions for finishing the room? I'm on the lookout for a cute headboard that would attach to the wall, as her bed is two stacking twins.

Oh, that's pretty. She'll need something on her wall -- one bigger picture would look beautiful, but at her age she might prefer several personal smaller ones -- family, friends, animals, interests (pop star?).
