How does this furniture fit in your room? It seems as though these large pieces will overpower the room, especially when you add the credenza. It also feels very formal for a young family with children. Something smaller and with cleaner and simpler lines in all the pieces would seem a more sensible choice, but if you love it and it fits then it's all good. I see now that it has leaves which can be left out. For furniture that is this traditional I would choose a large Persian rug. They have them in polypropylene, which is much less expensive than wool and can be hosed off outside. I would choose more of a tribal pattern rather than something flowery so that the room looks more current. This is a rug I bought for our dining room from esale.rugs, which has a nice policy of free returns if you don't like the rug.

yes we're planning on keeping the table without the leaves - so 80" instead of 120". i was a bit concerned it was too formal too but my husband really likes it and we'll mostly eat as a family at the kitchen island or breakfast table so this would mostly be for when we have friends over. we were thinking to have a Persian rug as well. debating on getting something more neutral colored vs. adding color to the room, any thoughts? i'm worried too much color might be competing with the dining set, at the same time the room is pretty bland as it stands.

I would not call those wood panels art. They are generic mass produced wall fillers. Art should not be about filling empty walls and matching the furniture.

I would take my time and find real art that "speaks to me" and makes me appreciate the beauty that some talented artists can create.

Totally agree with chispa about the art. And I don't think a beautiful oriental rug will overpower your table and chairs--it will set it off and will be a good place to bring in color. Many persian rugs have a natural background which will blend with your wall color. Then use the other colors in the rug to bring in accessories. But, as Terrance said, don't pick the art to "match", pick what you love and aim for a traditional frame to tie into the furniture.

thanks everyone! any suggestions on where to look for art? i don't think our budget enables us to go to local art galleries, but our taste leans us toward not wanting reprints.. any online gems you recommend?
