Hydrangeas Garden Clinic Garden

Please help identify what's on my Hydrangea branches ?

I planted a limelight hydrangea Tree I got from a nursery this spring in my front yard landscape. It was slow to leaf out and foliage is small. It's gotten fertilizer when I transplanted it 8 weeks ago. Now it has many small flower buds not opened yet. My worry is that it has these spots all along the truck and stems of the branches. I don't know what it is.

Can someone tell me what it is and what I can possibly treat it with?

If they don't scrape off easily, they are just lenticles, which are just pores along the stems and which Limelight of any of the paniculatas has the most distinctive and visible collection.

If they do scrape off easily, they could be scale but they look much too regularly or evenly placed for scale.

Little Lime has them too. Do not panic and get ready for those buds to open!

In other words it's just a normal part of the plant body. You can see these on many other shrubs also.

Some mopheads have a lot of them too. You typically notice them as brown spots against a green stem background.
