I second Gary's emotion. I've had excellent plants shipped to me from Hallson's, In the Country, Made in the Shade (which was just sold to someone else, so I can't recommend them yet), NHHosta, & HostaDirect. Make sure your seller tests for HVX and guarantees plants to be free of it.

I’ve been very happy with Land of the Giants and Green Mountain.

You need to do a search for the specific hosta you want and find out who sells it. Then ask them what precautions they take for HVX. Join the American Hosta Society which will send you a booklet of new registrations. If you see one here, ask the poster where it came from, or if it is available.

Be prepared to get out your checkbook, as the special new ones don't come cheap.

My top 3 are Hallsons, Naylor Creek, and Rob Canning (on facebook). Rob has the most extensive collection, all three are extremely good about selling only HVX free plants. Customer service is outstanding from all three.

I've purchased from Hostas Direct, Green Mountain, and http://www.hostas-store.com (via ebay user old-cartoon-comics). I've been pleased with all of them. Has anyone purchased hostas from Hirt's Garden's?

Thank you all for your input. I have used a majority of them with great success. I am looking for suppliers that have hostas that I have seen on the Hosta Library. I will definitely try the ones I have not used!

There are thousands of hostas listed/shown at the HL that are not or never have been available for sale. Many of the ones there have never been registered either.

It's really nice to see the hosta you're buying in person, although I've never been disappointed in Hallsons, Land of the Giants or Green Mountain. I've not bought from Naylor Creek, but it's always been highly recommended.

Are you thinking of Wade and Gatton?? Yes I have been there. It is very nice but the last time I was there they took the hosta you picked and cut it in half. You could buy the full one but you paid more. I am not sure if that is still their policy. Anyone else??

Yes, popmama, that's the one I was thinking about. Everyone seems to enjoy their visit there and be pleased with their purchases. I only know what I've read on this forum. I have no personal experience.

I didn't know that Wade and Gatton was in Ohio. It would a terrible experience to pick a hosta and then watch them chop it up. (Here, all commercial hosta are grown in pots and what you see is what you get.) If I remember correctly, the company changed hands when Van Wade died. Things might have changed. Maybe not for the better.

I think Jim of Jim's Hosta bought it. However, I just read online that Jim's either had a name change (Uniquely Hosta) or it has been bought. My one experience with Jim's was not positive. Jim Schwarz and Van Wade have/had the two most extensive collections of unique hostas around. I'm not saying I wouldn't buy from Jim again, but I'd have to want one of those unique hasta to do so. If I could get it anywhere else, I would.

Jim has retired and sold his collection to Uniquely Hostas as of last year. I believe that Van Wade's kids are still running Wade and Gatton.
