your orchids are beautiful! do you show them?

Thank you luvmy. I did but after a many year I decided against showing orchids. I do support our annual show with time and energy and a little cash.

I stopped when I found some corruption in the judging. Showing plants is stressful for plants. I lost 2 or 3 good plants. There are many reasons for the stress. And if there is questionable issues with the judges, then I just keep away. I look to see the judging results and take pictures. I have a fist full of blue ribbons and I have more than enough.

As I understand it, 'issues with judges' is one of the main reasons why the AOS is struggling. I like the magazine and most of what they stand for so I've subscribed for 15+ years, but I have never entered an orchid at any show and don't plan to in the future. Personal satisfaction of a plant well grown and/or bloomed is rewarding enough for me.

Dear Love my orchids. If you love your orchids, you should join a local Society (that is if one is in reasonable distance) Mostly not a problem in NSW, Australia where there some 90 orchid Societies.

Do not give this "my orchids are not enough to show" excuse for not joining an orchid Society because there are beginners sections where you do not have to compete against the experienced growers such as Harvey.

Then we get the same old thing about the judges, "they are mostly blind or corrupt."

My last year as the Show Marshal for the coming winter and spring shows, getting too long in the tooth. Happiness is when the AOC panel arrives to judge the shows. There would be nothing worse than getting orchid society members to judge their own show.

I recently joined the Long Island Orchid Society, which is my local society. I have learned more from speaking to the members and attending the meetings than I have from five years browsing for information on the internet! I think I got the idea to join from one of your's or Harvey's past comments and I have to say, it's the best advice to give a newbie like myself, so Thank You both!

I just purchased one from Fantasy Orchids in Louisville, CO that has an exact match in the flower colors and patterns. Apparently there is a lot of variety in the flowers. At least it seemed so when I googled it just now, shortly before I found this page in the results. Am supprised at the exact match.

The flower is almost done. Signs on the spike of one already gone.
