It looks good.

I am not understanding the combination of what appears to be shiplap, and the more formal cabinetry and crown. Is that shiplap? What look are you going for? Perhaps post more photos. That one little corner that we can see isn't enough other than to raise the questions I mentioned.

We are going for a cottage look. I don't have great pictures because we are in the chaos of construction but here are some adjacent rooms. The first picture shows the adjacent kitchen, the middle picture is the other side of the living room, and the last picture is how the rooms will look painted out.

Not to big to me. Rooms just not done, it will make a big difference when it is.

It looks fine. As said above, once everything is in place and finished, it will look right.

(altho i'd say for cottage i'd go for a lighter color but to each their own fantasy)

We went with grey for the bookshelves because the sofa to be placed in the room is a medium-dark grey and the club chairs are navy (we have dogs). Also, I wanted to balance the darker color of the furnishings and also to relate to the kitchen cabinetry.

Cove molding. All the way around the room. There’s way too much detail in that room already. Too many lines and froof for a simple farmhouse look.

I like the pictures without the molding better than with in regards to the rest of your finishes.

You don’t have the ceiling height advantage that that project has. And they don’t have the thousands upon thousands of V-groove lines that make your ptoject too busy already without even adding the detail of the froofy crown.

The simple design is never the wrong design. Very often the complex one is.

Simplify the molding if you want a cottage look.

I would lose the crown, and continue the flat 1x trim around the whole room and cabinets.

Your window and door trim is quite substantial too, so along with your countertops it may be ok. I would agree with something a little simpler though...your window trim is simpler. I do like the darker grey color.

I agree with others that you should continue the element around the room. If you do, I think you can get away with using that crown.
You may not want to hear it, but I would think about changing your window detail to have a sill. I am not aware of any historical precedent for picture frame on windows. The closest thing is paneling, but in that case the rails and stiles would continue and not leave a picture frame look.
It would be easier to change now than later. Get Your House Right has some brief interior molding descriptions, but I also recommend a book about Winterthur.

I like it. Everything looks beautiful. You guys have great taste and I love your spaces!
