Need help figuring out whats missing!

Ok love the basic elements of my room, but it just doesn’t have any pizazz! Going for bright fun, modern inspiration was Jonathan Adler’s style and new fabrics. The ring fabric is JA.

Is it accessories, do i need wallpaper, arghhh! Its too flat.

A bit too much pattern all at the same scale, I think. Not enough solids to ground it.

I guess I enjoy exploded crayon box..I would do a darker teal sofa with what you have and carry that color throughout the room.

Whatever you decide to do, it's a refreshing change from gray gray shiplap and gray...so kudos to you and thanks!

ETA fwiw I'm not sure the pillows you have are working for you. And can the portraits sit side by side on the wall or is there not enough room (they look to be the same size and frame from this angle)

Grovers blue drapes look good to me or I might go for some sort of pale blue on the walls. I LOVE the serious art and fun fabrics and rug--terrific juxtaposition! The brown sofa does want more connection to the space--he's kindof out there on his own. I don't think I'd care for your art with fuschia walls, it does look pretty with the lots-of-white-space artwork tho.

Lot of good suggestions...I would angle the chairs inward ...and of course they can’t go against the wall as the print would be hidden....paint the end walls a bright raspberry and the side walls a bright lime green.....when you get the added wall color the darker table, etc will be more crisp and strikingly contrast-y ....the last thing to touch on is the light deficiency...a cool mid-century chandelier over the dining table...and a ceiling fixture over the sitting area with the right bulbs will accentuate the colors and add the light needed for such a distinctive room...
Also I think the sofa is a nod to the rather serious art...and a little breathing space between all the color....the tufted style and fabric and sort of funky-ness.....make it as unique as the more colorful pieces

Love the turquoise panels. Where do I hang them though with the 3D window casing at the top? Above the casing really above like the pic or just above?
So if I go with light teal/turquoise panels
    A. What height to hang them
    B. Should I paint the room very pale blue or bright white - it is such a small room im scare of a dramatic colour like raspberry or lime
    C. So would the dominant accent colour be blue to carry around the room

I’m planning to get rid of the round dining set - too large and dark. Should I get white quartz top or glass with steel or brass base?

So a couple of large graphic colourful contemporary art ?

    Blue cushion and fuscia cushion.

What do I need on my coffee table?

I can paint the sideboard like fuscia. Thoughts?

DARK TEAL!! Now is not the time to be safe...

    (my vote)

Teal and chartreuse are smashing together!

I love the artwork. Lighting the artwork would show it off and help the overall sense of the room seeming too dark. Google "plug-in picture light" for ideas.

I like the teal pennydesign just put up!

My first thought was also to angle the chairs in just slightly to break up the seemingly perfect square. That's just a small adjustment and many folks have given great suggestions that I wouldn't have thought of.

Just be careful with teal. I have some teal drapes in my master bedroom that were custom made and I had to sample lots of fabrics to find the right teal color. Some were too blue and some turned very green in the space.

What a beautiful and fun room.

I'd pull the chairs all the way onto the rug and angle them slightly toward each other. Not at precisely the same angle! Loosen it up as someone else suggested ;-)

The pillows that match the chair backs would migrate over to the sofa along with a couple of solids, and on the chairs I would use a solid or a funky print of an animal. Not faux animal hide; check out greenfish1234's tiger pillows. I'll come back with a link in a minute.

Some real life inspiration a la greenish https://www.houzz.com/discussions/antique-buffs-which-chair-in-there-dsvw-vd~4524823

I like the teal, but it should go a little more blue, which would pick up the color in the banding and the chairs. I also like the pale gray and taupe as the backdrop for it all. Instead of the smaller plants, maybe a large potted palm or fig for some emerald?

Love your room! I find your use of color and pattern refreshing. It might be crazy but my first thought to add more color was orange. I love the play of orange and pink in the rug and it makes me want to see some more bold orange in the room. I also think adding a lamp would add some interest / light to the space.

I wouldn’t rule out color on the walls....if you are looking for excitement and affirmation for your furniture choices ...prints...and eclectic aesthetic ....now is not the time to be timid...
I think the art will be more at home and in sync on colored walls as well...making them less serious or heavy....

I love your room and your use of vintage paintings and modern furnishings. I think drapes are too predictable and will take away from the edginess that you have created. I would lighten up the wall color with a bright white and let your fabric sing. Can you add a modern hanging chandelier over the dining room table? Your idea of light and airy dining table is great. I would remove the second console table behind chair, one is plenty for that wall. Bring in some fresh flowers for life and color on your coffee table. Consider a grouping of your vintage art collection with a splash of modern art.

What about bringing colour to a wall like this?

    https://goo.gl/images/3u79Tv

    That's definitely exploded crayon box.

I do think you need to stick to one color on the wall, though...

Your room is amazing but I agree that you need a solid or two in a cool color to contrast with the warm pinks. The polka dot pillows on the sofa are too much of a pattern repeat. Grover's mock up is a good one.

Hello all! Thanks for the awesome comments. What if i painted the walls white and the trim teal? Like the idea in my inspiration shot above. Would love your thoughts!

I think painted trim can work well in a country kitchen vibe but I am not feeling it for your room.

    Thos was my inspiration room
White walls with teal trim that matches the fabric?

I saw the image posted above. Give it a try ... it just doesn’t do it for me . It’s kinda kitschy!

So how would you introduce some bold colour without darkening the room?
    last modified: 8 years ago

I like the idea of painting the trim...but keep in mind that you don't have crown molding to distribute that idea all around.

Are the walls staying gray? Was that done before you decided on this style?

As an aside, I just don't get the drape choice in the inspiration picture...unless it matches the rug?

Im going to paint out the walls white. The current colour reads a bit green. Im not particularly inspired by everything in the room. But it is the overall colourful happy feel that i like. Jonathan Adler style colourful!

I would go with a bright white paint think art gallery white. Colorful modern art mixed in with original art I think would look fab for your space.Painted furniture is another way to bring in color , dining table , side board could work. High gloss finish I think would be best for the look you are creating.

What about a colorful sofa? Bright blue, orange..

I think you could test with a bright color on the trim...you've got nothing to lose, really. I'm looking forward to what you do with this place. As I said, it's a refreshing change.

I feel like I am late to the party!

    Love the burst of color!

Right! will paint walls white add colourful modern art, get some solid pillows, paint out the sideboard glossy bright colour. Would like a bright sofa, but will have to wait. The. I will see if painting the trim is necessary. I probably will go with a bluer teal or turquoise if i do. Great ideas and advice! Next i will come for accessory advice to give more depth to the room! Any other advice is welcome!

Ami Ing, Your portraits could be re-framed and even temporarily "altered" to look more modern. How? Change to a slim, bright lacquered frame. Altering the image would entail framing behind UV glass (leaving a space pocket) and painting on the glass....recently I've also seen washi tape and ribbon used on the glass to "alter" the work beneath.

Sounds expensive! And scary! What if something happens during the process. They are irreplaceable.

???????????????????re-framing is scary????????????????????? As for the faux altering, it does sound beyond your comfort level but really, no art is harmed in the various processes.

I'm not sure I would add gold pillows. Your pinks and brown sofa are very warm. I would add a chartreuse pillow instead to bring in some of the cool chartreuse from the window treatments.

I think you can improve your fun and already well decorated room fairly easily. The art is fine, I would not alter it in any way. Adding some more modern art wouldnt hurt though. Your sofa seems perfect.

I echo many already expressed opinions. Yes to fresher wall color and new pillows. The pillows need not be a solid color necessarily, just bolder in color and pattern. Drapes would be a great addition in my opinion. The new color you add (teal seems great) should be a bright, impactful shade.

The art is antique and valuable which is why its scary to think of doing anything to it. But i am ver interested in the idea, what is the process called.?

If i add curtain panels, where should i hang them? The window casings at the top extend out. Would you hang them just above the casings? All the way at the ceiling? Or just below the top casing?

Wow, first time in a long time, that scrolling through here, I see a room, I could actually live in, and feel comfortable in. Most are so absolutely dull and perfect, that having a cup of coffee in one of them, would make me very uncomfortable. I love your room. I do like the idea of the darker teal curtain panels, and I would look for a much lighter shade of that teal for the walls.

Wow Cat! What a compliment! Thanks!

I would put the drapery to the right and left of window but placed on a rod on the wall, not the depth of the window. I would allow the edge to abut right up to the glass but no further on each side.

I could see adding a pair of flat-ish plug-in sconces on either side of lowered painting over the sofa.

Thanks both of you! Good ideas! I may move that painting in favour of something modern and colourful!

I like the painting...is there a match there in the dining area? Would they fit next to each other.

I like the painting very much and it goes great in the room. Good design is not normal or expected.

Have you thought about a chandelier for over your dining table?

    Penny
The painting over the sofa is smaller than the other by 8-10 inches in height. Chandelier over the coffee table is a
Must but over the dining table would have to hang only 12-18 inches because I don’t want to block the sight line from the window.
