You have a great start on your space with good foundation pieces and great updated color selection on your wall. I have attached inspiration boards to give you some ideas and inspiration. I would update or replace the china cabinet. It will definitively freshen and update the space while adding interest.

TV in this space?

If you can live without the hutch, the dining area will look more updated. The blue art over the cabinet might fit well. Love the blue. It reminds me of Newburg green?

You really need a visual separator. What do you think about painting the hutch and moving it closer to the living room so that it is between the rooms. You'd then put a table behind the sofa.

I think that the hutch is in the proper location. moving it in closer to the sofa will make the wall seem unbalanced and crowd the living room. If you do an arrangement of large art centered on the living space it will balance out the china cabinet and also define the living area

Some hutch come in two pieces and can be separated.

If the bottom piece looks good on its own, I would put the top piece in storage and work with just the bottom.

Lights and mirror above it, would update your dining area. Change hardware.

Or possibly move the piece into your living area, either way, it would look updated.

Can we see a picture looking from the dining room hutch toward [I'm assuming] the front door area? Also, is that an aquarium you're going to set up ... or just a plastic storage bin by the blue wall (past the couch)?

I was thinking maybe paint the hutch/buffet a blue would add some interest.

Could you try love seat on back wall with the 2 chairs opposite to make a conversation area.

Is the color in the matching chairs the same as the sofa color? Are they white and taupe?

The colors are similar but not exact. The sofa has a blue hue and the chairs are lighter grey and white

Another thought(to kind of echo njmomma) is to remove the hutch and put a console there and decorate it. Add another console to the living room side and decorate it. You'd then add artwork or floating shelves in between - like in the middle of the wall. This would complete that wall. Then put a table between the two chairs and bring in a coffee table. All of this would help make it homey.

The biggest single step to define the 2 areas is to add area rugs ....perhaps rugs with some color and pattern to liven up the space....it seems odd to some people to add rugs over carpet...but it really makes sense... as it offers a shield from soiling and wear and tear......on the carpet .....in the heavier traffic areas......especially in your case under the dining table...secondly a console table behind the couch will definitely add a sort of separating effect.....as for the buffet ...if you keep it ...it needs to be balanced visually in the living area with decor/art at least as big as the impression of the buffet....the biggest challenge in these types of rooms...... is to decoratively address the very high ceiling peak in your plans

One more thought ....unless your family size requires it....I would remove all the extensions in the table to bring it back to the scale of the rest of the furniture...and balance out the room better....it is hard to be certain about this as the pictures don’t encompass the whole room....
