Birdseye view - I went with the white hostas on top of that “hill” previous owners created had dumped trash from a foundation issue the house had. Anyways .. added the white kinds to brighten the area - now I wonder if it’s too much.

Hosta Garden today 2018. Going to build a patio this summer :-)

I like the mass planting with white margins..it does bring some "light" to the woods..I like the asymmetry of one side longer..arborescens hydrangeas would look nice..or some plain hostas..or ferns..any shade plants would be pretty..just my opinion but I would NOT use gravel..looks more natural as a "dirt" path..I'm picking out gravel from previous homeowners..ugh..I would much rather walk on mulch or leaf litter than gravel..

Thank you so much Nicolew. You made a good point. I think we might have to rent one more time a big wood chipper for tree removal. There are still 2 large fallen ones in the brush and than i could use the chips for that. They don’t look as nice as the bought kind but it will do for now

I have to look for the hydrangea you mentioned. Got last week 3 invinciballs for $5 each at Lowe’s. They don’t look like much right now but I give them a chance for that price tag :-)

Add some purple in there. It's how my little slice of heaven started. With hostas I hated and some I love. Then I built on with purple plants (wandering jew, purple shield, rex begonias) and added some white to lighten the area. Just a few more things and she'll be complete and ready to mulch.

Seriously, is "too much" even possible? They look very nice to me, but the only thing that really matters is that you like the look.

As for mulching with wood chips from the property, go for it. Put down a nice thick pathway, then if you think it doesn't look as nice as the bought kind, get a few bags of 'bought' and scatter it very thinly over the home grown stuff. It's called cheating...

Claudia..the hydrangeas you bought are arborescens..it's a type of hydrangea..they're cold hardy and bloom on new wood..good in my climate and yours..they're fast growing..your bargains will look good fast..

Karen: I agree something red would look pretty! I think Karin Black mentioned a lace leaf tree but that’s not in the budget right now. I did try to add last year heuchera, from 7 only 2 came back. I moved them to a bed along the house (across this Hosta bed) and they are doing well there. They get more light. I am going to look into the plants you suggested. Thank you for sharing your new garden! I love how you arranged your plants, they are all very nice sized already!

the Hosta bed in the front of the house I took apart, decreased it and added grass seeds today. My very first time :-) I am curious if they are going to make it

Great to have a nice plot of land to plant lots of hosta. You will find that you will always be making some changes. That's the fun part. Some astilbe would add nice color. White would compliment the green and white hostas.

I do not have room for mass plantings, but I like the look of the path with the hosta border.

I too put variegated towards the back hoping to add light to the darker places, but they don't show much 15 years later. They did not grow as fast or were never going to be as large as their bed-mates, I guess. I have many Anabel hydrangea also marking the very back of my beds. The ferns are the, "back fence" however.
