Lawn services transfer in weeds ?

I'd kept our lawn relatively weed free for 22 years. About 6 years ago I hired Rainbow Lawncare to take care of fertilizing, weed killing and aerating. A year or so later we began getting some small patches of extremely thin bladed grass. The patches have been growing. Then quack grass cropped up about 3 years ago and has been spreading. We also seem to be getting more dandelions and stuff as well.

Is this likely just happenstance or they brought these from other yards with their equipment?

Either you can buy prodiamine pre-emergent weed killer, or buy a separate lawn mower for the gardener to use to avoid cross contamination.

5 pounds of prodiamine costs about $60, apply every 6-8 months, and can cover 2.2 acres or more (about 100,000 sqft), so one bottle pretty much lasts forever for the average lawn.

For the average 1500 sqft lawn, that comes out to $1.80 per year in weed killer.

The other possibility is that the aerated cores are bringing up weed seed from the soil.

Regardless, you need preemergent weed killer.

Thanks. They do pre-emergent each year as well as a couple of more applications of fertilizer and spot weed killing. They don't seem to have a solution for quack or crab grass or the other invasive grass.

quackgrass you really just have to selectively apply Roundup and hope for the best.

Quack is a real bear to get rid of, but Roundup works. It also kills everything you get it on; so you will have bare spots that need to be reseeded. The separate lawn mower is also a good idea. You might also check around for a different lawn service.

You already hired someone to take care of weeds. Make them do their job.

Seems to me the service's chemicals do not work as well as the one's you used when you were doing it. Maybe have a chat with them.

Did the weeds start soon after you started aerating? Some claim that aerating brings up dormant weed seeds to the surface for germination.
