How long can I wait to root it?

So it’s ok to let the cutting callous over for a month or more? What’s the shortest time a good callous usually takes to form?

All depends, I typically dry it out 10 to 14 days then use bag method to root the cutting.

Just to be safe...try the pin prick test to see if you can get white sap from the dark areas along the stem. Unlikely but the image could just be deceiving.

I basically run up the stem until i find clean wood and then clean the cutting blade with rubbing alcohol before making the final cut.

Ok. I'll check. Can I let it sit 5 or 6 weeks while I'm out of town before I try rooting it? Or am I better to cut it now and let it callous for a week, pot it up, and hope for the best while I'm away?

I'm left with about a 15" branch. Do I need to let it callous over in a certain location?

Dip it in rooting powder and wrap the cut end with plastic wrap and a rubber band to hold it tight. Then let it set up for about 10 days.

Is anyone else concerned that there still appears to be brown in the pith of the cutting?

Rob, like Odyssey, it looks like you're probably not quite finished preparing this to set up. I'm no expert like Kms is but I'd slice off little bits of the end until you don't see anymore brown in the pith. Wait however for one of the experts to comment.

Thx for the comments, all. I noticed the little brown spot and chopped off a little more and did not see any more brown. I've dipped it in rooting powder and covered it with plastic like kms recommended. Will pot it up in a few days.

Hopefully you'll be good after you let it callous for 10 days after the last cut. I know anytime I have left even a slight darkness in the pith, rot has always overtaken my cutting so I am ruthless about cutting until there is nothing but white showing,
