dining room dilemma

Hello Houzz peeps. So this is my dining room, which is also the front entrance to my house and is sitting between my kitchen and living room. I have a large table, with 8 chairs that I adore. I’m having a dilemma. I want to paint, but don’t know what to do. And I want to decorate. I have big dreams for a poor girl. Advice and suggestions are appreciated.

    Cute kitty.

    Nice dining set.

Do make sure you protect it while painting. Move all the chairs to another room. Cover the table with painter's "drop cloth" plastic -- and be safe: don't slide down on the edges of the plastic. Especially where plastic is atop plastic, it can be slippery.

Your flooring looks gray in one pic and pink in another.

Whatever color it actually is, use a very pale shade of a color from your flooring for your dining room.

Guessing that moving the front door is not in the budget? Is your family size and/or floor plan such that you could use another room for your family/dining room and use this area only as a "formal" entry/living room?

You have a lot of family pictures in small picture frames? Move them all to one gallery wall so you can add more size appropriate art to your dining room.

This is a round table, but take some inspiration from this pic.

The mirrors do wonders for the space.

Picking the right color to paint the dining set is key. Possible just paint the table or just the chairs, but not both and then decide if you want it all one color.

Could you change your overhead light so it is off center in the room, centered over the actual placement of your table required by traffic from the front door - and, perhaps, choose an elongated light for the longer table.

Hi there, to add my 2 cents to the discussion above, I would suggest rising the curtains rod and getting longer curtains so that they graze the floor. It will elongate your space visually. Ideally, also try to increase the width so that the blue box to the right side of the window is hidden by the curtains. For example hanging them like this:

I love large tables, but it is hard to tell in the photo if the table is over-powering the space. It seems to me the space needs to be both softened and brightened up (although that may be the camera's fault, not the home's) so I would suggest adding some light, possibly a plant in the corner, and adding a rug under the table. Is it possible for you to center the table as well, in the space rather than having it against the wall?

How much money do you have to spend on your room? What feeling do you want it to have-fun and casual or more formal? What colors do you like? Do I see some teal in the living room pillows?

Don’t have a budget, don’t have the money. But I can do something. The living room is ocean themed with teal. The table is usually a foot or two from the wall, I just have it pushed back because I was cleaning

What are the room dimensions, and what is the width of the table?

An off question -- would it make sense to swap rooms in your house and have the first room be the living room and the dining room be located through the arch to the back?

The table and chairs are so handsome. It's a shame their warm golden tones don't harmonize well with the "cool brown" of the floor. So a large rug, one big enough so chairs can be pushed back three feet, can cover the floor. It's hard to tell what your wall paint is. That table and the big chairs deserve some beautiful large art--no small pieces--and richer curtains.

These colors--maybe abstract food themes or landscape--horizontal on that long wall.

It's hard to tell what the current color of the wall is. Is it a creamy white or a light yellow? What colors do you like or do you prefer neutrals?

Do you usually have the curtains closed for privacy or can they be left open?

For free, I would move table to middle of room. Raise curtain rod (I would suggest widening it but looks like that might not be possible with switch plate and door frame). And remove pictures from walls. Can you shop your own house for art of rugs you have that could be used?

Hi Devon! I finally recognized your family room from your prior dilemma. Never mind my question about switching rooms.

In the family room, you did chocolate brown, sand and a teal/turquoise. Those colors would look nice with the wood of your table and chairs.
