I do not recommend any specific installation methods as I am not a licensed contractor. It is up to your contractor to find a solution that both you and he approve.

If I recall, this fireback was secured with super strong epoxy to a pieces of plywood securely attached inside the wall between the studs so everything was flush...you would never want to notch any structural studs. I also think there were securely attached angel irons in the wall that supported the bottom. As you can see in the picture, the tile is proud of the face of the fireback.

Here are some installation options, though others are thinkable:

You can install any type of fireback with special mounting brackets (for stone walls) or regular metal brackets with screws (for drywall and studs). This can be done in both a new wall or existing tile wall. Disadvantage is that the brackets remain visible.

In a new drywall, a sturdy option is to weld ‘L’ brackets to the back of the fireback, that are fixed to the studs/framing of the drywall.

Alternatively, a contractor can recess the fireback into a drywall and hang it with a high quality construction adhesive (rated for cast iron). This option is possible for firebacks that aren’t too heavy.

Or, an aluminium angle screwed to the wall under the piece, then adhesive to stick it to the wall. The angle will support the weight, the adhesive will keep it from going anywhere.

Of course, you can also drill holes in the sides of the fireback and fix it to an existing or new wall with screws. The holes can always be repaired with some kit or paste.

Costs of door-to-door delivery to the USA and Canada (prices in euro including packaging, insurance, but excluding costs for local duties):
up to 5 kg: € 51 (2-3 days delivery)
between 5 and 10 kg: € 66 (2-3 days delivery with UPS)
between 10 and 20 kg: € 95 (2-3 days delivery with UPS)
between 20 and 30 kg: € 115 (2-3 days delivery with UPS)
Above 31-100 kg: € 3,5/kg (2-3 days delivery with UPS); if transport above 100 kg: € 6,-/kg (2-3 days delivery). Please ask us if we can give a sharper shipping quote.
