Mannerly climber for wall

last modified: 8 years ago

Hi all, sorry for another beginner question/solicitation.

I have a 6.5'H x 8'W wall in the front of the house. I was thinking of planting a climbing rose to cover the wall. The wall gets morning sun and gets shaded in the afternoon, here in sunny SoCal. I have no experience with climbing roses.

I've seen many photos of climbers which grown against the wall have mostly bare legs on the wall and blooms at the top of the wall.

Is is it possible to train a climber to cover a wall and continue to have blooms on the wall? Would this be something you'd recommend for a beginner?

There is a beautiful gold/tangerine/peach color hibiscus growing on the opposite side of the wall, always in bloom and has flowers that peek over the wall.

I was thinking maybe Colette or an English Rose might work, something that might soften and compliment. But maybe they wouldn't be sufficient to cover the wall? I love the look of Sombrieul but from what I've read it sounds like this would be an unwieldy monster for a beginner and get too big for the size of the wall.

It seems many people have recommended Crepescule and Rev D'or but not sure if I want more yellow with the hibiscus already there.

I wanted to to transform the look of the front yard from blah shrubs to a cottage garden. It's going to be a lot of work...

Any thoughts, advice, recommendations.

I am also open to other plants, if a vine or non-rose might work better I would be happy to hear all ideas!
