Yes, pull off a stolon (or ten) at the base, where it connects to the mother plant. Then stick the pulled ends in a container of moist potting soil. Roots will grow from the end in the soil and a new baby plant will follow.

I've also heard that you can lay a stolon on the soil and brush soil across it in several places and several new ferns will develop, but I've never seen it done and don't know for sure if that technique actually works for ferns.

I too have been waiting that it might root where it touches soil but haven't had any success yet.

It will root. It takes time.

Mine has I didn't know what they were, and it landed in the pot of one of my spider plants and now I have a fern growing in it. I have been searching the net trying it find out if I should cut it from the main plant seeing it has roots. Edit : I don't want the little fern or spider plant to die from being in the same pot, so I lifted it up and let it take what soil the roots had a hold of and put it on a plastic cup with some more dirt for now.

there is no reason not to sever it from the mother plant..

there is probably no reason that it needed to be removed from the spider plant pot..except for jamming each other up in 3 to 5 years ....

neither are going to die...

houseplants are supposed to be rather easy and carefree.. dont turn them into stress inducing things...thats not the point of this relaxing hobby..

just dont love your plants to death.. and you ought to succeed wildly ...

Marcy (above) is clearly not correct in the assertion that the runners cannot make a new plant; they can. Not only is she wrong on the runners, but on how many ways ferns can propagate. Nephrolepis do spread in this way, but also may make propagules at the tip of the frond. Some ferns make tip plantlets, some like the ”mother fern” and ”Alaska fern” make plants on the frond surface, some make stolons or runners like we are discussing, a few can propagate from a frond cutting. Spores are the sexual method of reproducing.

I myself find the running stolons untidy, and cut them off. To each their own.

I had the fern "Tiger Stripe" propagate for the last 2 to 3 years by runners after plopping the pot on the ground for summer. It isn't hardy in our area so now that I know that, I dig up the little starters and give them to like minded people. I wished it was hardy for us, but mine never came back after winter.
