Well this little guy showed up, so the plan is to let the wood grow out for a year or two, then get some scion wood and try and graft up a whole tree.

Are growers selling these? If so, I won't bother. If not, it's worth having something unique. I remember working really hard to graft a Sudachi and then finding a healthy tree at the nursery. Same with the Page mandarin.

Nice find. I would not say what your tree did was common, but then it is not rare either. Cara Cara is known for that. The variety Cara Cara is itself a mutation.

I think what will be less common is if I am successful at making a whole tree of this.

If I remember right cara is known for getting variegated sports but also reverse if grown as a variegated tree. I would love to grow one here too. Did not see them offered in any store

Variegated Cara Cara trees are commercially available in Europe.
