Yes in USDA 4 you will have to use something really hardy like those junipers. I wouldn't put another spruce in front of a spruce, rather something more different in texture such as the junipers.

I'd second motherload. If you don't want something as flat I really liked lime glow. Awesome winter orange color. Good vibrations was one in the same for me.

I think a Picea orientalis 'Tom Thumb Gold' would look good there.

Well, it sounds like something gold is in order. I will definitely keep my eyes open for Mother Lode.

The two small spruce can be moved; there’s always room somewhere for dwarf spruce. I’ll give that some thought. I am reluctant to plant any more junipers. The genus has been a disappointment. Still, after seeing Alley_Cat’s J. ‘All Gold’, I may give it one more try. :)
