Seedlings Part II

I tried to do a major seedling post a week ago when I couldn't get much through. So this is the rest of my seedling post.

Several older seedlings were moved to beds where they get 8-9 hours of sun. I had hoped this would result in better multiplying and bud count. That only happened in a few instances. They had the fewest buds ever. I don't know if that's because they were moved in October and haven't settled in yet, or if it's due to weather related issues. Since they are almost always in the sun, it's hard to get good photographs. Those with ornate edges like the former Valentine Sweetheart have been plagued this season with splotchiness due to a thrip explosion and repeated rainstorms. It's interesting and sometimes disappointing to see the changes in these seedlings raised in part shade. Some have faded horribly and taken on brown tones in this summer's heat. Others that set every pod before, refuse to set any now.

Alan Lane Agin X Cosmic Sensation is the most sunfast of my seedlings. Even on 96 degree days, it only faded slightly. I'm not sure if I will ever introduce it. The edge is not as impressive as I would like, and the bloom is only 5.5 inches. Does anyone buy daylilies with blooms that small anymore? I know I don't. Scapes used to be 29 inches. This season they were 27 and not well-budded. The first two seasons it bloomed it had four way branching and bud counts of 20 plus. I wonder if being in the shade these last couple of years has caused the plant to lose its vigor.

The former Valentine Sweetheart fades somewhat but is still colorful at the end of the day. I counted fans yesterday, and it's up to 20 fans, so I guess I will register it next year. This baby has a 6 inch bloom on 25 inch scapes with instant rebloom and bud count of 16. I had hoped to get some good clump shots, but there were too many splotchy blooms recently. Since most of the fans have rebloom scapes coming, maybe I'll get a good clump shot on rebloom.

Trimmer seedling "Laughing Hyena" x Back Scratcher is also likely to be introduced next year based on older stats. 7.5 inch bloom on 30 inch scapes with bud counts ranging from 14-28. It has 15 fans now. I need 20 to introduce it. It's likely I will have that by next Spring. This one multiplies pretty fast when it has enough sun.

Precious Candy X Twilight Illusion #1 - I always thought this would definitely be an intro. But it fades badly in 8 hours of sun when the temps are over 90. It fades to light pink - at least it isn't brown. The blooms are 5.25 inches with a 29-inch scape. The first few years it bloomed it had bud counts ranging from 18-23. The plus side is that it sets pods well in full sun. So even if I don't introduce it, it may be a bridge plant that will yield an intro someday.

This is the color when nights are cool.

This is the color when nights get warmer.

Into the Mystic X Symphony of Praise - I'd like to register this one if it ever increases enough. Like my other SOP babies, it's a slow increaser. 5.5 inch bloom on 25 inch scapes with dependable rebloom. Bud counts in the past ranged from 22-26.

Natalie Antoinette X Symphony of Praise - 7 inch blooms on 29 inch scapes. Bud counts of 11-18. Slow increaser.

Symphony of Praise X Henry Lorrain - 6.5 inch bloom on 27 inch scapes. Throat pincher. Has been different colors this summer based on temp and moisture. This one did increase from three fans to five after going into full sun.

This is its most usual color in my garden

I love many of these! Great post. I do hope you get a lot registered. I am with you on wanting larger flowers. The 7th and 8th ones are my choices.

Wow Debra! You have a touch for this. Some beautiful seedlings for sure. I would like to see the Thing That Ate The Seedling Bed registered. IT is too hot here to be in the garden late all such a pretty clump.morning, so that wouldn't bother me a lot, and it is a lovely clump. They are sll so pretty. I think I like the fisst two a tiny bit the most, but there isn't a stinker in the bunch.

Debra, some really pretty ones and ones definitely worth registering, all things considered of course! I like the first two best but the others are also nice. Your "thing" has certainly proved its hardiness and blooming ferocity. In our heat, very few lilies do hold their color and I am certainly not out and about in the garden during these heat temps so I agree with Kay. That trait would not bother me very much. I think I have mentioned that Precious Candy is the least favorite (of mine) in the candy series. In my garden, it shows some latent lavender color but as soon as the heat comes, it becomes very muddy. Your seedling seems not to retain that characteristic.

Such wonderful seedlings, Debra! Kay is right, you do have a gift for your plant choices. It’s so hard to pick a favorite, to me they are all register quality. The flower size isn’t as important to me, 5” bloom is good. I need some contrast in my smallish gardens and size is a form of contrast for me. I would be really happy with Great WhiteXEmperor Butterfly here, as she is!

Kay, Kate and Sherry - Thanks for the feedback on "Ate" and the flower sizes.

Brad - Thanks for your comments too!

Debra - they're beautiful, all of them. It is difficult to narrow down to a few favorites, but here goes: Mokan Butterfly x Bali Watercolor, The Thing, and that first one.

A difficult year to be evaluating. If this year were typical, I would be throwing out a lot. Disappointing to hear the Valentine Sweetheart has had a lot of splotchies.

Mantis - Most of my daylilies have had splotches - even the ones without edges. It's caused by three things: rain, heavy dew, and a thrip explosion because the repeated rounds of rain made it impossible to spray for thrips. In the past five years, the former VS was rarely splotchy, so this is not a usual characteristic. The area of mega sun where it's planted also seems to have more bugs of all kinds than other areas of my yard. Normally the air has dried out by the second half of June and we don't get so much heavy dew. My pants, even rolled up. are wet about 8 inches up my pants every morning from walking in the dew.

Nice group of crosses you have. Congrats.

Thanks for the comments, Alex and Julia!

Like DBD x TJ. Is it as white as it looks? Good bud count.

Shive: Lots of problems are blamed on thrips. There may be other causes. Research is being done on some other pests. Some results may be forthcoming in the next year. I am not allowed to discuss particulars right now, or Pat will be upset.

Debra , you have to register "The Thing that ate the Seedling bed" . It looks like it is a blooming machine! Wonderful . Impossible to choose a single favourite .....but if pressured to choose, I do really like Precious Candy X Twilight Illusion #1 and"Laughing Hyena" x Back Scratcher and A Little Fire, Scarecrow x Snake in the Grass Boo and Persian Pattern x True to Whim and Mokan Butterfly x Bali Watercolor

You have lovely seedlings. The Alan Lane Agin seedling, the seedling formerly known as Valentine Sweetheart, and the Little Fire, Scarecrow seedling are my favorites.

I don't care about bloom size. We grow them all the way from minis to the huge ones and love them all. I think for the buying public a larger bloom is an asset, but I don't see a smaller bloom as a deal breaker when registering.

Dick - DBD X TJ is a near white with pink undertones much like its parent, Tuxedo Junction, but a bit whiter. In my climate the heat bleaches the petals to a pure white by noon, but the sepals still have a pinch of that pink undertone.

Signet - Thanks for giving your opinion about "The Thing That Ate the Seedling Bed." It does bloom well, and used to have instant rebloom in the days when it got full sun. It is quite pretty until about 2 in the afternoon on the hot days.

Hoosier Nan - Thanks for giving your opinion about the smaller blooms. My preference is for the larger blooms, and those 5 inchers look like minis to me.

Debra, thank you for such a detailed and informative post. You have so many beautiful seedlings! I enjoyed reading the various details. Hard to choose a favorite, but the former Valentine Sweetheart is definitely on the list. My other top picks include The Thing That Ate the Seedling bed and its seedling that bloomed this year, Dust Be Diamonds x Tuxedo Junction, and Mokan Butterfly x Bali Watercolor but all are lovely. A smaller bloom would not deter me from buying a cultivar if I liked the look of the bloom.

Your seedlings are wonderful, Debra! Really impressive, I looked back and forth, every time I picked a different favorite so gave up. I do hope you register the Persian pattern seedling. And The Thing is just remarkable, I would certainly like it in my garden!

Lori - Thanks for reading all that. I looked at all the text and thought maybe I went overboard. Good to know you buy 5 inches if you like their looks.

Nancy - I finally cleared all the weeds around the Persian Pattern baby, and it has lost fans since the beginning of last year. I noticed the place where it is gets more afternoon shade than it used to. So I don't know if it's the shade or the harsh winter that caused the loss of fans. I need to divide it up and plant it in full sun in September.
