The actual answer is you need to buy some thin shim stock to put behind the cabinet where it will be screwed through to the stud. I ripped some 4 in wide pieces the height of the cabinet from a 4x8 sheet (forget the thickness) and mounted it to the back of the cabinets vertically before placing and screwing to the wall. This prevents your cabinet back getting sucked off the side frame when the screw tries to pull it flush.

Dave, what did you end up doing for install? Shims only, or add an 1/8"-thick board to be a nailer board / nail strip, or something else? I ask because I'm planning ahead for my Conestoga cabinets - although I'm hiring help, I like to be prepared :)

We just did Conestoga kitchen. Shims and screw

on the top above cabinet, not from inside of the cabinet. I did use side panels for inset and that was a bit of pain to make flush with the wall. Still need to caulk the wall.

@lindalana: which Conestoga cabinet did you order for your microwave? Is it the one intended for built in microwaves? I don’t like the look of the other one they have with the shelf that sticks out, but I don’t have a built in microwave.

Spainte, I got one with stick out shelf and it is cusomized to me being short 5', perfect height for me. Built in microwave is a big deal if you go for everything built in, I do not. My remodel is about functionality first and it was easy peasy and looks good. I wanted everything off the counter.

@lindalana 5b Chicago we're getting the face-framed kind with 1-1/4" overlay doors. (I love the look of inset tho!)

Oh thanks! I like how yours looks, so maybe that shelf isn’t so bad after all. I’m also short, 5’1, so I like the idea of lowering the microwave cabinet a bit. Is it just longer than your other wall cabinets?
