Not sure if you can tell, this one is on an old "christmas moose" He is a purple guy for a few weeks!!

This one has never done as well. The idea was to grow it on a wild honey suckle bush. This year it has more blooms than usual but didn't really climb.

Lilyfinch and arcy, I love your pictures! Very pretty. I would like to get a white clematis that would grow well in my area.( northern lower Michigan), does anyone know of one and where I could send for it? My clematis is the deep purple but with the sun it looks like two different colors.

i purchased the trellis at NewEnglandArbors.com. Mine is "The Athens Trellis." They have so many to choose from.

Marylmi, For white clematis there is Huldine which is a large vigorous white flowered plant (with some light pink on the reverse). I also have John Huxtable which has slightly larger flowers, but not as many in my garden. They are both summer bloomers, and sometimes the flowers are eaten by Japanese beetles which seem to like the white flowers more than others in my garden. There are also spring blooming white flowered ones such as Henryi and Guernsey Cream (a favorite of mine) which will be done blooming before the Japanese beetles come out. You might also look at clematis Margaret Hunt and Giselle, both of which will bloom around now in a light purplish pink that I think would look really nice with your deeper purple flowers.

With summer blooming clematis like your purple ones, they bloom on new growth, so pruning them down hard like you did this year or down to just a few buds per stem every winter will mean there are flowers too to bottom on the plant. These summer blooming clematis are referred to as type 3 prune, but that just means prune them down in the winter or early spring for the best flowering.

Your purple clematis looks great on that trellis!

Thank you NHBabs, I will check out your recommendations. I too am looking for a vigorous white or very light pink clematis. I had a small-flowered one with four petals at one time but it languished. Now I want to plant a white one next to one of my purple ones and let them intertwine for interest. Here is one of my clematis. I refer to this one as "the clematis that ate Arvada" because it is so vigorous it could almost be called invasive. I had a very large sturdy arbor built just for it this year.

This topic was also added to the Allium list, probably because there were several lists checked when the topic was opened. That feature of the newest version of Garden Web is crap, because it is extremely easy to overlook. Please be careful what you add to where and only check the appropriate list(s).

OldDutch, yes it was overlooked as I thought only the clematis forum was checked. That is one feature I am not quite used to yet.
