Painted Brick??

My husband and I are in conflict over design again, on whether or not to paint the brick in the kitchen and between the stove and kitchen sink white. Our painter agrees with me that we should leave the charm and add a clear varnish to give it some shine. My husband on the other hand feels that the breakfast nook is too dark and it needs to be lightened to match the rest of the kitchen. To Paint or Not to paint, the brick ? This is the question. Thanks in advance!

    I would leave the rick but paint that wood paneling.
