Aeysha hydrangea

Does Aeysha hydrangea bloom on old or new wood? I've had one for 5 years and it's never bloomed. I'm wondering if I need to winter protect it or shovel prune it...

Wow, I realize that in Z7a, you may get some Z6b winters sometimes but, how odd that it would not bloom during any of the last 5 winters at all.

Consider these other causes/suggestions... Do not prune it on/after July or allow it to get dry in dry winters. If your soil does not freeze, give it some moisture every two weeks or so (to prevent the plant from zapping the flower buds due to lack of moisture). And keep it well mulched 2-4" to protect the roots from temperature extremes. Watch out for deer, squirrels and bunnies that may be eating the flower buds. Also, make sure you are not fertilizing it too much; just once a year should be enough. And yes, winter protect it. I hope you get some bloomage in 2019; you have earned some blooms after waiting this faithfully!

I have never pruned it just because I wasn't sure whether it bloomed on old or new wood but now I know. I really want to rip it out but the petals (from what I remember--lol) were different from any hydrangea that I had ever seen. They looked like little spoons--similar to lilac blooms. Do you think it might do better in a pot? That way I can store it in my garage over the winter. The only thing is that Aeysha is a pretty vigorous grower so I worry that the pot might get too heavy one day...

Mine started in a pot for 1.5 years to strengthen its root system. Then planted outdoors for 2 years. Hasn't bloomed once. So I will lean towards old wood.

No leaning involved :-) If the plant was in existence before 2001, then it is an old wood bloomer, as are all macrophyllas introduced before that date!!

I ripped out the Aeysha and put it in a pot. I'm about ready to dump it--it's been 5 years and there's so many more reliable bloomers out there.

See if a garden club wants it for a sale. They sometimes have sales in the Fall.

Don’t give up on the Aeysha, mines 2yo now, love the flowers, very unusual. (I’m in the UK)

@arickster...my Aeysha looked like yours when I bought it for $12 from the local produce store. I've had it for 5 years and it's never bloomed...:(

Mines in a pot that’s a bit small, maybe it likes being treated rough!
