Does this work for a bathroom? + Tile question

Someone told me that this penny tile shower floor will be a maintenance nightmare, regardless of grout color. Is that right?

Feedback/suggestions On the group:

Counter - Light quartz w/gray veining

Cabinets - pale gray shaker

Floor - wood-tile porcelain (planks)

Walk-in shower - subway tile w/light gray penny tile floor (med gray grout)

Shower accent - floral tile with darker gray grout (shown against black board)

No to the shower floor, I think going hex would be the better option. Something about the color of the vanity or the floor that isn't quite doing it for me.. maybe something a little darker.

Love your choices! I think the materials combination you originally presented look gorgeous together. I can't speak to the appropriateness of the penny rounds on a shower floor. I'm curious if the floral tile would would on the floor? It would be really cool to use the floral tile on shower floor and then have some vertical accent carrying them up the shower wall too.

Still trying to figure out the shower floor. Since it’s about 60x36, it has a voice in the room. I don’t think it should be a loud voice because I think the quartz counter and petals are the stars of the show.

    Options 1 and 2

    1. OFF WHITE PENNY with GRAY border on each penny.......
    2. PEBBLES.

    Option 3: Original gray penny.

Option 4: Porcelain hex ...haven’t found the right one yet.

The other items in the picture are the solid gray subway for the shower walls, the wood-tile bathroom floor and the light quartz counter.

How many different tiles does that make for your bathroom now?

Can you picture the choices so far?

The shower is all white subway, w/the white petals, right? You know what I think looks dull? the same tile on the outside floor, the walls of the shower and the same tile in a 2" square on the shower floor. In my mind that's dullsville, boring. The only way that should be considered is if you're using some super bold color or some other bold tile (and even then I still wouldn't use just the one tile).

Look frosty,,,what you've picked is very subtle. no one is going to walk in your bathroom and shroud their eyes in horror. the new penny tile you picked is nice. I like the gray edging. the pebble tile is nice too.

browse through bathroom pics here on houzz. just look at all the 'multiple tiles' in the room. the key is, do they all coordinate. I have 6 tile choices in my bathroom. It was featured in a story here on houzz. I get multiple saves of my bathroom every day to others idea books. To some, it's' Wow, what a great bathroom. and to others I'm sure it's, " do you have issues w/tiles?" I don't really care. I love it and I'm the one who lives with it.

the petals and the subways are the same color. You really don't even count that as 'different'. Pick what you like for the shower floor that goes w/the outside tile and it will be fine. Either one of those in your pics will work.

Thanks for the excellent advice all along, Beth. Subway is super pale gray and petals are marble shades of white and gray. I think all the colors go well. I am still looking for the right porcelain hex.

Would love to see the featured bath you did!! You have awesome ideas and taste.

I had to take a picture of the display at the store today to post here. Now that you pointed out about the gridlines, I can’t unsee them...

yes! that's exactly what I mean. drives me crazy. now they make the sheets (some of them) with wavy borders so that it fits more like a puzzle piece. otherwise, you have to peel off those stones and hand place them one by one. I've done it!

Here's my bath (i've since removed the teak bench and have put up a floating vanity shelf in the same countertop material, with a vintage white mirror. the gold stool sits under it.

frosty, I'm also of the opinion you need some punch...a darker vanity color, perhaps. Also, consider an accent wall.

Cheryl, the floor tile is a Helsinki White product, but may not be imported any longer. The latest version, at Floor and Decor, is called "Finland White".

Thanks, Texan. Can you expand on the accent wall suggestion? Do you mean a whole wall in the shower in an accent tile? Or something else?

Accent wall instead of accent stripe or waterfall would look much better

We have the pebble floor tiles with varying lighter and darker tones and we love them. My husband (who is NOT a professional) laid them and grout lines are not apparent at all. They came on sheets because there is no way he would hand place them. But you can't tell where each sheet begins or ends. I don't remember the name of them, but we are very happy with their look and feel.

More grout means less possibility of slipping because of soapy water or shampoo on the shower floor! One-inch penny rounds or mosaic squares will allow you plenty of grout for safety. Use colored grout, not white, because white or pale grout will get discolored over time. Use a high-quality sealer for the grout.

frosty, an accent wall is a wall painted a different color than the rest of the walls. If you look at my picture, the slate grey wall above the shower tile is the accent wall. The bathroom was bright but white/grey with a little interest in the accent tile in the niches and the movement on the granite. Adding the darker, accent wall added a pop to the room was you walk in or look in. I chose to match the color of the vanities, which were also chosen to stand out and add interest.

Texan, yes, I wasn’t sure if you meant change the shower tile to make it an accent wall or the painted accent wall. 100% agree on wall and planned on that. I’m also looking at a potential shiplap for the wall when you walk in

I may have found the floor pebble mosaic that won’t create the gridlines! It’s advertised as interlocking and one of the commenters said the pieces fit together and it’s advertised to create the seamless appearance. This would be Beth’s point on what would be needed or else you have to lay them out. [Pebbles[(https://www.houzz.com/products/12x12-sliced-interlocking-pebble-tile-gray-prvw-vr~117307465?m_refid=PLA_HZ_117307465&device=t&nw=g&gclid=Cj0KCQjwm6HaBRCbARIsAFDNK-j_hD8u-etEfYN52SJWBIem7BzMCOXlLz-Axwaf_MMg8lA3eSVSJiMaAnAcEALw_wcB)

I wouldn't mix the petals with the pebble tile. Two different looks looks a feel. Choose one or the other, but not both!

Yes, Blondelle, initially I was going to use with the gray penny, but now since I’m doing pebbles, I don’t feel the same about using the petals.

Am not going to do an accent waterfall anymore. I will doing something in the niche. Not sure if I’d bring in the pebbles or try to find a glass mosaic or something. THe shower is a pale gray (close to white) subway.

Do you all think a mosaic in the niche will work with the pebbles as long as it’s all in the same colors?

    Like this?

I still cannot figure out what tiles you're using.

How about using black pebbles on the floor and going up a small wall with the niche in that wall? Very dramatic, yes?

  • PRO
If you want a touch of dramatic, do black hex or white with black accents on back wall. Perhaps a basket weave with accent tiles. I know there is white basket weave with cobalt blue accents and black accents.

Leelee, pale-gray-ever-so-slightly-crackled gloss subway shower walls, flat-stone pebble shower floor in grays, weathered grays wood-tile plank porcelain floor, shaker vanity in either pale gray or slightly off white, misterio quartz counters which have that creamy white base with subtle light gray veining.

  • PRO

The weathered, wood-look plank bath floor and stones on shower floor have significant pattern which i think the shower wall subway tile provides relief and balances the quiet counter. Not sure from a weight and pattern fatigue perspective if introducing more pattern in the shower may be pattern overload

frosty, wet those pebbles. do you like how they look wet? (color will be deeper and richer).

if so, use the enhancing impregnating sealer 511 or aqua mix are fine). no sheen. if you like the way they look natural, then use a sealer that won't alter the color. (same brands. just read the label). when you seal the tops, make sure just the tops are done. don't let it drip down the sides. just take a rag, coat each one, and wipe off residue after 5 mins. not a big deal. takes 30 mins. you do this because during grouting, you can get a lot of grout residue and haze that will get in the tiny pits of the pebble and it makes clean up much more difficult.

this is what I use on my marble floors in the shower.

OK, then you could do a silver/gray accent on that niche wall, or use gray grout for a subtle accent on white tiles.

The shelves are the same solid material as the counters. Niche tile doesn't change from surrounding wall.

Just a note, Beth. 511 products come in an Impregnator and a Seal & Enhance, not a combined product. The Impregnator is the product to keep the pebbles looking as they are when dry, the Enhance product gives them that wetter, more colorful look when dry. I used the Impregnator to prevent the browns from dominating in a similar pebble mix.

Frosty, if you are still considering a mosaic for the niches, we used a Polar Star glass mosaic, which is a white/grey with slight blue undertones.

Niches full of products shows off the products, not the fancy tile behind them. Unless all you put in them is a single razor.

Functional niches should be hidden out of the focal area. The focal area tile need not be in a niche. But it should make sense and harmonize as a whole. Not as a bunch of individual choices that don’t ever really mesh into a whole.
