Drip irrigation

i tried to avoid as much as possible to hire a company to install a drip irrigation system in my propriety. But last week took me 9 hours to water all my rose beds. And then I thought, “Holly cow I probably have to this again tomorrow and day after tomorrow and over and over again. I give up!“ Finally I hired a company to put down a drip irrigation system in my garden and from now on, it’s set up automatically to water my plants 3x a week. It has a rain sensor as well to turn off when is about to rain. I’m super happy. I didn’t like to spend the money on it, but I don’t think I could keep growing roses without it. Now the crew is here, putting pipes underground and I’m super happy

Good for you! You have such a beautiful garden and it's so much work watering . I'm feeling you . We usually get so much rain here, but after having gone a few days without I'm seriously thinking I need something similar. I need to YouTube this and see how I can install it myself though! I don't have any money left over after buying roses! At least I feel I should put down some drip hose. Is there any chance of it going off when you're not home and not stopping. That's my only concern really. I'd hate to get a huge water bill. I don't know how the folks in California manage.

@vaporvac Here in Maryland there is plenty of rain until the first week of May. After that we have weeks of drought with temperatures around 90F Obviously not as bad a California, but bad enough to kill all my plants ( like you I put a lot of money into my garden and it’s a hobby for me, I don’t want to see all my rose bushes frying). I have been watering manually the Rose beds for the last 4 years and I actually always enjoy doing it. It’s therapy. But every year I add more roses and now it’s becoming a torture. I can not spend more time on the yard than with my family. Also since it’s drip irrigation I did spend a lot of money on this system but I will save a lot of money in the long run on the water bill.

I tried to do it myself, but it’s way more complex than I thought. And the one I saw at Lowe’s are for small gardens and not heavy duty. Those people are doing the work are trenching 1 foot holes all over 1 acre in the ground to install the pipes. The people from the phone line and water sewer and gas had to come before the digging started to mark lines on the ground. So yes, I don’t think I could do it myself. And yes, I can automatically turn on and off if I go away. It’s controlled by a computer just like a cell phone. Long story short... having this now it’s a weight out of my shoulders ❤️

Thank you for such a detailed answer. I have 1.1/3 acre on3+ levels. It would be heaven to have it on just a few beds! I think the auto aspect is the best as even remember to turn it off could be an issue as I'm side-tracked so easily! It was bad enough watering the pots and upper level, but now I've moved to the front yard and 2nd level beds that I've been clearing out. I realize I need to figure something out before putting in an arbor on my lower levels. Hmmmm. Can you add onto yours if you expand?

Oh yes He offered 3 options because he didn’t believe I would put pipes everywhere lol. One of the options was irrigating just few beds. Yes. I can expand as much as I like. I can even do it on my own now since the pipes are inground and the heavy work is done. And connect even to hanging baskets AND pots!

Hey there! Glad you got it done. It will be so nice to sit back and let the system do the work for you! Now my question is, can you fertilize through the system too?

Hiiii @lily! Yes! I can fertilize ( it will Not contaminate the water) , put mulch around, even small river rocks. The tube is rubber, very flexible and thin. Also, if one plant die, i can remove and replace with a new one. Im thrilled, bc the guy who own the company will show me how to add extra pipes to the existent system if i decide add a new bed in my propriety. The idea of do it in the pots and hanging baskets is very cool as well. I can set up the system to water the beds for 45 min ( remember its a DRIP system), or in cases of the weather is extremally hot for 1:30min, 3x a week or 2x a week or whatever. If i go away for 2 weeks a can program everything and leave. I can also program to turn off the system any day. Pretty cool if you ask me. Like you, I have a toddler, its become very difficult spending time in the garden lately.
