phragmipedium culture

Having read that phrags need lots of watering, I've been wondering if I can grow them directly in unchlorinated water? If so, how would I fertilize? I have 2 phrags that are doing okay, but I know I'm not doing as much watering as they need. Plus I have a piece from one of them that came loose when repotting one of the 2 which I put in a glass vase. It has grown some impressive roots and seems perfectly happy there. That's the one I'd like to keep in just water unless readers can tell me why not.
