They could possibly be Dorothy Perkins.

Thank you Jane and Mad-gallica. Armed with Jane’s suggestion of a rambler, I had gone hunting, and came to the same conclusion as MG, so it is nice to have that confirmed as a reasonable ID. It is the right color, flower cluster appearance looks right, and Dorothy Perkins is zone 4 hardy according to two different sources, so I think that is probably a correct ID. And it supposedly has at least mild scent, another plus for me.

MG, do you have any other suggestions of similar roses wih more scent? I have grown a range of other roses over the years and have come to appreciate the once bloomers that aren’t blooming when the Japanese beetles are at their worst. My current favorite is Zephirine Drouhin, which does have some repeat bloom after the beetles have gone, so still suits me.

Are you looking for a rambler, or just a once-blooming shrub? For ramblers, most of the multiflora hybrids like Veilchenblau should work for you. I don't grow them because they don't like my soil pH. I tend to do better with setigera hybrids like Baltimore Belle, but that one is almost impossible to find apparently.

I've been searching for ramblers recently and you might also want to look into Walsh's ramblers. He worked in Massachusetts and, as I understand it, many of his ramblers can be found throughout the area. I've been trying to find his 'Debutante' or 'Lady Gay' (both are pink as is 'Dorothy Perkins' that you likely found) at nurseries without much success but I imagine that they can be seen growing in some parts of the New England area as they were popular a century ago. His 'Excelsa' was known as 'Red Dorothy Perkins.' I found it odd that most of these ramblers, many of which were bred in America, can easily be found in the European nurseries but hardly here. I'm on the same quest for 'Baltimore Belle' that MG mentions without much luck so far.
