Ice maker in second home

I've never been a fan of dedicated undercounter ice makers--the constant use of water and electricity to produce ice that immediately melts away, and the notoriously bad reputation for reliability and leaks. But we have just purchased a new lake house which has one installed. DW is delighted, but I worry, especially about leaks as we are typically out only on weekends. So, two scenarios to consider:

If I turn off the main water supply to the house, but leave the ice maker turned on, will that lead to any kind of problem? Will the machine constantly try to make ice, wasting power? Will the compressor fry?

If I turn off the ice maker when we leave, will residual water lead to mold growing in the unit?

Or am I resigned to having to leave the thing on, making ice constantly for weeks at a time when we are not there to use it?
