great and beautiful job! I saved your pic because i knew i was going to do a built in for our tiny dining room. Currently there's a window behind where the shelves would be. ( window's going to have to go per code when we convert the carport to a garage. I was trying to figure how to have shelves to the ceiling behind the seat without guests hitting their heads standing up or sitting. Simplicity!

I wrestled with the depths of both the bench and the shelves. The overall depth is 25" with the shelves being 10" and the bench 15". The seat depth was the tough one but I based on it on my super-comfy low back barstools. In hindsight, I would have made the shelves even an inch less deep, but this does allow for housing more "professional reference" books.

I love the custom unit and you made use of the space, it looks great!

Does the seat open for storage as well?

Yes. It is full storage and there is even a secret hiding compartment for my tween daughter.

clever! if you find wallpaper art or wallpaper that matches the seating stick it on the back of one of the shelves to tie in the symmetrics of the bookcase
