I should think that the function would be as a hobbyist activity and esthetics.

Cleans the air, keeps me active and for everybody's visual enjoyment.

Air cleaning function would be minor/insignificant as well as for increasing O2 in the air. Personally, I'd agree it mainly comes down to hobby and aesthetics.

Mine don't have a function. Needy little devils.

I thought, as Paul above, that the cleaning function might be minimal, but scanning several .edu sites it would appear NASA has found that plants reduce formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, ozone, toluene, and benzene. NASA of course is interested in a somewhat different environment than our home or office.

It's not that plants don't clean the air, but rather how much "shrubbery" one must have to make a significant difference. (Growing conditions matter too.)

Hmm... my 92 years mother cannot just eat. She needs to have each food categorized... blueberries for the eyes, raspberries for blood pressure, eggs for this, olive oil for that.. a slab of bacon ... because if people are raised on fatback...it is good for them in thick slices... Looking at her - I am thinking probably she is right about thick slices of bacon... she is refusing to use walker because it is for old people, not for her.

Anyway - we love our AVs, they bring us joy, heal us, keep us grounded and tied to the Mother Nature. It is probably the biggest benefit we can have. We will live longer and happier. Like an hobby - it is interesting and fun.

Though... one -three cats in a house is pure joy, 12 is too many - and 100 is a major health hazard, animal hoard etc,etc...

I am definitely a plant hoarder. Between gesneriads ad AVs - over 500 varieties. I do not have plants in my bathroom. That's It.

You know..there are plants (like ferns) that appreciate the extra humidity in the window in the shower stall (lol). I have them there..and water them when in shower often...
